The Actuarial Profession's Facebook page provides an opportunity for graduates and school students to learn about the Profession and to engage directly with people pursuing an actuarial career.

Student members who joined the Profession within the past two years are being invited to participate actively and share their experiences with graduates. Other members of the Profession are also welcome to join the conversations.

In addition to interacting with school students and graduates, the page can be used for:

  • Networking opportunities with other actuaries
  • Discovering new knowledge about the Profession and the world of risk
  • Sharing comments and links to content on the wall relating to actuarial science
  • Watching the video which introduces the Profession to graduates
  • Playing the game, "Extinction or Distinction" to test your maths mettle against other members of the group
  • Linking to other related games on the web

Building awareness and a positive image

Research conducted throughout 2008 highlighted a low awareness of actuaries among employers and other groups, and a lack of positive associations linked to the image of the Profession. Many actuaries are engaged in careers that tick all the boxes of high-flying graduates and it is important to promote these aspects of the Profession in a simple set of messages shared by all.

The research findings can be read here.

Actuaries are experts in risk management

As experts in risk actuaries are:

  • Risk focused
Their breadth and depth of risk knowledge can be applied to a variety of financial and business areas
  • Advisory
Their excellent consultative and collaborative skills improve understanding of key business issues
  • Influential in development of business strategy
Their insights and conclusions about social and economic conditions are used to inform important leadership decisions
  • Practical problem solvers
Applying their knowledge of mathematics to solve real world challenges
  • Sharp business professionals
They have a broad and contemporary understanding of business
  • Dynamic and exciting
They work in a highly challenging and rewarding career

These key messages can be used as broad guidelines to help explain what an actuary is and does. Ideally they will be integrated with personal insights into your day-to-day life, which will bring substance and richness to the messages.
