Careers: Prospects for qualified actuaries

Your future is up to you!

With an actuarial qualification your future really is up to you. It's bright wherever you look. Your all round business and analytical skills can open up all manner of opportunities:

In business

Once you’re qualified, there are lots of prospects at managerial and board level in both private and public sector organisations. The profession is becoming increasingly recognised for its valuable contribution to other business areas, so employment opportunities are growing too.

Around the world

Many UK qualified actuaries are based overseas and with the trend towards globalisation, there are more opportunities than ever. Other countries may of course have additional requirements before you can practice. The UK Profession is working with other world-wide bodies to create a truly international qualification.

Members are also encouraged to shape the future of the profession by participation in research and discussion groups. It may be a small profession but it has a big future.

Young entrants to the profession say:

'Teaching actuarial science at Higher Education level and doing research has proved intellectually challenging and rewarding'

'Nearly 30% of the UK profession's 5,500 actuaries are based overseas, mainly in Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand so the choice is endless'

'My last two postings have been in India. The two roles couldn't have been more different'

'As a trainee actuary, my future looks both promising and exciting'
