The Actuarial Profession and ILC-UK joint debate: Changing the Perception of Retirement

01 March 2012 16:00 to 19:30

You can listen to this event as an mp3 recording.

Registration: 16:00 - 16:30

Programme: 16:30 - 18:30

Drinks reception: 18:30 - 19:30

This event will explore how the perception of retirement is evolving in light of demographic pressures, and considers whether a new understanding of the balance between work, leisure and rest in later life can help society to respond to population ageing.

This event will encourage discussion on particular initiatives and innovations that might help us to transform the meaning of retirement in a fair and sustainable manner such as:

  • new approaches to intergenerational relations so each generation understands the challenges faced by others – and how they can learn from each other;
  • new designs for state and occupational pension schemes such as the ‘graduated state pension’ and ‘save more tomorrow’ plans;
  • the development of agreed metrics of health status;
  • the move towards patient-centred healthcare where geriatricians and GPs consider the holistic health of the individual;
  • a fuller analysis of the benefits and costs of preventative medicine;
  • new forms of self-employment and volunteering which may enable more older people to remain productive beyond state pension age.
