Lessons for actuaries: An unconventional career in insurance management consultancy
Andy Cherkas, a Cass actuarial science alumnus, will be giving a talk in influencing or advising insurance company management on core business decisions. As he will describe, he found the disciplines required for addressing management problems very different from solving actuarial problems – and no less exacting and certainly no less rewarding. He contends that inserting actuarial techniques into solving broader strategic and performance problems can deliver deep insights and helps uncover optimal solutions.
This talk will be of interest to actuaries considering wider careers as Andy will share his experience of tackling unfamiliar disciplines and establishing credibility.
He will also share personal reflections from his career, use some anonymised case studies and will provide time for discussion.
About the speaker:
Andy spent over 25 years in the consulting business for with Towers Perrin (now Towers Watson). For the last 20 years before ‘semi-retiring’, he focused not on traditional actuarial work but on advising insurers on strategy, performance improvement, product proposition development, distribution, risk and organization – in the US, UK and continental Europe.
Andy is now a visiting lecturer at Cass and conducts occasional consulting assignments.
