Programme: 17.30 - 18.45

The Eurozone has been lurching from crisis to ‘solution’, and back to crisis for over two years now.  The alternating pattern of relief and disappointment has become well established, and perhaps the only surprising thing to date is that the market remains capable of expressing relief despite so many disappointments.

In this talk, Neil Record, a finalist in the 2012 Wolfson Economics Prize, sets out what he sees as the ‘fundamentals’ of the Eurozone’s financial and economic position.  He covers intra-Eurozone trade imbalances; the role of the ECB; the nature and role of “Target2” balances, member states’ fiscal positions, and the alternative ways in which the current imbalances could be moderated, reversed or accommodated with more permanent financing.  He will put into context the EFSF and the ESM – the European common funding mechanisms, and review the possibility of ‘Eurobond’ issues.

He will end by setting out a series of indicators which may give critical or early clues as to the direction that the Eurozone is heading.

This event will be of interest to all practice areas.
