Why attend?

This talk provides an opportunity to hear Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, discuss hidden mathematical ideas that can often underpin artistic creativity. From composers to painters, writers to choreographers, the mathematician’s palette of shapes, patterns and numbers has proved a powerful inspiration. Through the work of artists like Borges and Dali, Messiaen and Laban, Professor Marcus Du Sautoy shall explore the hidden mathematical idea that underpin their creative output and reveal that the work of the mathematician is also driven by strong aesthetic values.

Marcus du Sautoy is Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Fellow of New College, Oxford. He appears regularly on television and radio, including Horizon and BBC Radio 4, and is a successful author on mathematical topics (including Music of the Primes; Finding Moonshine; Num8er My5teries). His academic work concerns mainly group theory and number theory.

Who should attend?

The Secret Mathematicians is open to all members and non-members who have an interest in the topic. This talk is presented in partnership with the University of Oxford, which is creating a new Mathematical Institute to offer a purposeful and lively environment for mathematical thinking and teaching to flourish across the full range for subjects from actuarial science to mathematical biology
