About the event:

Behavioural finance is where psychology overlaps with financial theory.  It attempts to explain why people sometimes make irrational financial decisions.  And, let me tell you, spotting examples of behavioural finance patterns within the Fantasy Football and internet poker gaming arenas is like shooting fish in a barrel.  This presentation will demonstrate many examples of typical mistakes made by poker players and FF managers and identify how similar mistakes are made in the world of finance.

About the speaker:

Steve Mills is currently enjoying life within the Risk Specialists Division at the FSA, where he has been since June 2010.  He has a wide experience of financial services, having worked for five life insurance companies (ManuLife, Citibank Life, Black Horse Life, AXA, Prudential), a consultancy (PwC), a reinsurer / derivative house (GeneralCologne Re including Gen Re Financial Services) and a traded endowment dealer (Beale Dobie).  He has developed a speciality around derivatives, market consistent valuation, stochastic modelling and market risk and is a member of the team of examiners for ST6.

Sometime in the early 2000s, Steve attended a training course on Personal Impact, run by an out-of-work actor who has appeared in Emmerdale.  The change was startling, changing him from a typical, quiet actuary into a confident, innovative presenter, not afraid to push back the boundaries.  He received higher feedback scores than all the other presenters at both the 2005 and 2006 Life Conventions - one of those two presentations is the one to be repeated at this event.  He has also written a number of articles for The Actuary and is particularly proud of one that explained Duckworth Lewis without mentioning cricket (try googling Doctor Who pension projections).
