The latest thinking on the resource and environment implications of climate change is of increasing interest to financial institutions and the work of actuaries. We are delighted that Professor Sir Brian Hoskins will deliver our latest thought leadership lecture on The challenge of climate change.
Climate change due to human activities is a challenge to scientists, engineers, industry, the financial sector, policy makers and society in general. The physical basis for concern over greenhouse gas emissions and quantitative evidence from observations of the climate system that generally supports this concern will be reviewed. Projections for future climate change and its impacts will be presented, with the uncertainties and the handling of them highlighted. A discussion will be given of the approach by the UK Climate Change Committee and the implications of the acceptance of that advice.
Sir Brian Hoskins is Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College and Professor of Meteorology at the University of Reading where he has been for 40 years. He has had numerous national and international roles. Currently he is on the Board of the Met Office and chairs its Scientific Advisory Committee, and he is a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change. He is a member of the science academies of the UK, USA and China, and has received a number of awards in the UK and internationally. He was knighted in 2007 for his services to the environment.
