Professional Skills Courses for newly qualified members

Professional skills is a key aspect of our membership and members are required to attend courses or events at several points in their membership to understand what this means for them.

Members working in the UK are expected to attend Professional Skills Courses in the UK organised by the Profession. To qualify as an Associate you will need to attend a Professional Skills Course after completing the relevant exams; for a Fellow, attendance at a Professional Skills Course within the first year is mandatory.

Professionalism courses overseas

To date recognised versions of our professionalism courses have primarily been organised by the Profession, although a number of overseas professionalism courses have been approved as equivalent to those organised by the Profession. This includes professionalism events organised by:

  • Society of Actuaries
  • Casualty Actuarial Society
  • Society of Actuaries in Ireland
  • Actuarial Society of South Africa
  • Institute of Actuaries in Australia
  • Canadian Institute of Actuaries
  • Singapore Actuarial Society.

With an increasingly global membership, we would like to offer more courses in countries where our members live and work. This will also reduce the need for overseas members to travel to the UK to attend these courses.

The Profession encourages local actuarial associations to run such courses, and for these associations to gain approval from the Profession for any relevant courses to be approved as equivalent. Any local actuarial association interested in organising an overseas professionalism course is advised to contact Neil Hilary.
