Dr Eamonn Butler is Director of the influential policy think-tank, the Adam Smith Institute, and an author and broadcaster on economic and policy issues. A PhD from St Andrews, he worked for the US Congress and edited an insurance magazine before helping found the Institute. He has written books on economics, psychology and politics, including The Rotten State of Britain.
Jules is the Assistant General Manager and Head of Marketing, Underwriting and Claims for Gen Re Life in the UK and Ireland. Prior to that he was Managing Principal in the Alternative Solutions business unit of Gen Re based in London with responsibility for development of reinsurance solutions for clients in the UK, Spain and South Africa. He joined Gen Re in South Africa in 1993 as the Head of Marketing and Product Development. Before that he was employed in the Employee Benefits division of Metropolitan Life in South Africa.He is a member of the ABI's Long Term Care Working Party and a was member of the Private Finance Working Party advising the Department of Work and Pensions in the build up to the issue of the Green Paper on Social Care. He has a Bachelors Degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science from the University of the Witwatersrand and is a qualified Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
Maggie Craig joined the ABI in July 2007, having previously worked for Standard Life and Aegon in roles involving a wide variety of lobbying, policy and media work.
Maggie has been in financial services since graduating from Glasgow University in 1979. She has worked for an employee benefits consultancy, as an IFA and on secondment to the Department of Work and Pensions. Her knowledge and experience of financial services and pensions policy issues is extensive. Before joining ABI, Maggie contributed to many legislative and regulatory consultations, including the Pensions Act 1995 and the FSA’s Treating Customers Fairly. She joined ABI as Director of Life and Savings in 2007 and was acting DG from November 2009 to February 2010 and from July 2010 to April 2011. She is now Director of Financial Conduct Regulation leading the ABI work on conduct regulation and on consumer initiatives.
She is also a Governor of the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) and a trustee of Personal Finance and Education group (PFEG).
Sue joined Just Retirement in March 2011 to be Head of Actuarial Development – Care Solutions. Prior to joining Just Retirement she worked for M&G Re/Swiss Re for 18 years and Watson Wyatt/Towers Watson for 8 years. All of her roles specialised in long-term healthcare products, e.g. long-term care, income protection and critical illness.
Sue is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries US (“FSA”), a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (“FCIA”) and a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries UK (“FIA”). She also chairs the Health and Care Practice Executive Committee for the Actuarial Profession and is a member of the ABI LTC Working Group, the ILAG Dilnot Focus Group and the SHIP LTC working group.
Andrew Haldenby is Director of the independent think tank Reform. His previous organisations included the Confederation of British Industry, the Centre for Policy Studies and the Conservative Party (1995-97). He studied History at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (1990-1993). He has an MSc in Economics from Birkbeck College, University of London (2008).
Michelle Harrison works with her clients across Whitehall to develop better outcomes for the users of public services. Her work encompasses customer journey research, segmentation, customer satisfaction measurement and modelling, public consultation, and policy related social research. She regularly facilitates high level policy and strategy meetings across Whitehall. She has enjoyed facilitating many large scale public consultation programmes on behalf of government Ministers and for the Office of the Prime Minister. Michelle has a particular interest in social trends and delivers the Annual IIPS ‘What the Citizen Wants’ lecture. Previously, she was commissioned by the BBC to develop The Blair Decade, a series of programmes on social change in Britain. Michelle is a Director of the charity Involve, and a council member of the Food Ethics Council. She has sat on numerous public bodies and commissions, including most recently the Green Fiscal Commission (2006-2009). She was previously a Director of The Henley Centre where she worked as a consultant to business and government.
James Lloyd was appointed Director of the Strategic Society Centre in September 2010. He read Philosophy at University College London, and has Masters degrees in Comparative Politics and in Public Policy. James has worked at a number of Westminster and academic think-tanks, and at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit. He has a particular interest in social care, pensions, financial services, as well as individual and societal ageing.
Previous publications include ‘Asset Accumulation in Focus: The Challenges Ahead’; ‘Living and Caring? An Investigation of the Experiences of Older Carers’ and 'Early Access to Pension Saving'. In 2008, his proposal for a 'National Care Fund' is widely acknowledged to have transformed the debate on long-term care funding in England and Wales, and he is a regular commentator on social care reform. James has taken part in various expert working groups and committees for the Department of Health and HM Treasury, and is currently an Advisor to the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change at the University of Essex.
Ian is Chairman of the Partnership Group, the UK’s leading provider of impaired, enhanced and care annuities and until recently the UK’s only provider of pre-funded Long Term Care Insurance.Ian is a fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He was formerly Managing Director of Zurich Personal Lines, Managing Director of Eagle Star Life and Chief Executive of Eagle Star International Life. He has served as a director or Chair of many other Zurich and Eagle Star Group Companies, both in the UK and overseas. In addition, he has previously served as a non-executive director of AA Insurance, as a non-executive director and Chair of Endsleigh Insurance, Group Director at Liverpool Victoria and non-executive director of Resolution Life. He has been a member of the Association of British Insurers’ Life Insurance Council and Chair of the Medical Committee.In addition to his duties at Partnership, he is currently non-executive Chairman of A-Plan, and a non-executive director of Canopius (a Lloyd’s underwriter), Guardian Life and of Unum. He also chairs the ABI’s Long Term Care Group.

He is also a trained therapist who moderates and speaks at conferences all over the world on reputation management as well as various aspects of intimate and business relationships. He is the author or co-author of seven books. His latest is “How to be The One”. He is a visiting lecturer at Henley Business School. Clients include: AON, BT, HP and the International Olympic Committee. He has just returned from Rio de Janeiro where he moderated his fifth global summit for the Olympic movement.
