Day three

09:30 - 10:30 Plenary 2

The Actuarial Profession has greatly broadened its horizons over recent years, moving into new fields, enhancing awareness of pensions, insurance and asset risk, engaging in political lobbying at UK and European level and highlighting the macro-economic implications of proposed regulations. That said the “typical” actuary still works in pensions, general insurance, life or investment. We will hear from three actuaries who have carved out niche positions in non-traditional roles using their actuarial skills. Jenni will discuss her roles in marketing, strategy and business development. Lyuba will contrast working for an established insurance company versus investing in less sophisticated emerging market economies. George will then explain how he applied his actuarial skills in a management consultancy before setting up a successful health consulting firm.

Speakers: George Orros; Jenni Stott, Lloyds Banking Group and Lyuba Tarnopolsky, EBRD

The final plenary will put delegates to the test as we walk through a variety of scenarios and ask delegates “What would you do next?” The plenary will concentrate on those situations that delegates might be faced with in a normal day in the office, and how right and wrong can be measured in several shades of grey. Delegates will get the opportunity in their groups to vote on the proposed next step as Tony highlights the issues to be considered in a number of case studies.

Speaker: Tony Hewitt, Imperial College Business School
