Borrowing library books

Members who do not live or work near one of the libraries can borrow books by post. Books are normally issued for four weeks and can be renewed provided the book is not required by another borrower. We stock most publications on the list of suggested further reading for the Core Technical (CT) and Specialist Applications (SA) Series exams and have multiple copies of the popular titles.

If the book you want is already on loan, it can be reserved and sent to you as soon as it is available. If you require a book or periodical article which is not in stock we can usually buy a copy or borrow from another library.

Books will be posted free of charge using the cheapest method. If you need the book more quickly this can be arranged but you may have to pay the additional cost.

Borrowers are asked to return books to the library from which they were borrowed. The address is on the date label in the book.

We will send all items from stock requested before 12.00 hrs out the same day. Should this not be possible, we will let you know.

Please request items for loan using the online catalogue or by e-mail to libraries@actuaries.org.uk. Please include your ARN and preferred delivery address. Although we will have your details on our membership database, if you include those details on the form it will reduce delay.

Please note that while we try to accommodate your needs, books and other items may be subject to recall. You will need to pay the postage to return the library item. When you wish to keep the library item for more than the initial loan period, please request a renewal using the libraries@actuaries.org.uk address.

The library cannot lend course material. This may be available for purchase at a reduced rate for overseas students – see the document listing countries where students are entitled to the special overseas rates.

Returning library items

Please be aware that some of the books in the library are heavy and can be expensive to send and return. Please ensure that all items are packaged carefully and return them by courier if this will ensure they get back to us, as we make a charge of the replacement cost plus an administration fee of £25 for non-returned items.

As stated above, we may recall an item if it is required by another library user.
