Other actuarial libraries

The following libraries allow members of the UK actuarial profession to use their collections for reference only:

  • University of Aberdeen
    "Individuals, other than registered staff and students of Aberdeen University, are currently allowed free access to the Library for personal reference and research."
  • University of Birmingham
    "Members of the public are entitled to 10 visits in a twelve month period, each time you visit you will be asked for suitable current identification such as a driver's licence, a passport or a utility bill."
  • University of Bristol
    Contact the Director of Library Services before your visit
  • British Library, London
    A reader pass may be issued subject to your need to see specific items in the collections. You need to go to the Library in St Pancras and you need to take:
    • proof of employment or proof of membership of a professional body (or we can provide a letter of introduction)
    • proof of address,
    • full details of the items you need to see
    and they may grant a readers pass valid for up to three years.

  • British Library of Political & Economic Science (LSE)
    Members of the public doing private, non-commercial research may apply for reference access to the Library, providing the required research material is unavailable elsewhere.
  • City University
    Apply direct to Liz Harris at City University
  • University of Edinburgh
    Reference access is usually free of charge, although you will need to provide some photographic proof of identity, and address, before being allowed access
  • University of Glasgow
    A one day visitor’s pass may be available upon application at the Membership Desk – you will need to bring identification
  • Heriot Watt University
    Reference only access is unrestricted – sign the visitor’s book at Reception
  • University of Manchester
    Individuals can access the Library on three separate occasions after which they will need to apply for chargeable external membership
  • University of Reading
    Free access for reference and private study - sign the visitors' book at reception
  • University of St Andrews
    Free access, except before and during university examinations
  • University of Southampton
    Free access, but you may be asked for ID
  • University of York
    Free access

The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has a library of actuarial and insurance literature. Access is available with annual CII membership or on a chargeable daily or monthly basis.
