The link between Gray's Inn and Staple Inn goes back about 500 years. Staple Inn (along with Barnard's Inn) was one of the "daughter" inns of Gray's Inn. As befits an Inn of Court, Gray's Inn provided academic instruction to the students at these Inns of Chancery.
Mindful of the close working relationship between the legal and the actuarial professions, the Institute renewed the link between Gray's Inn and Staple Inn by holding the first annual Reading for some 300 years on 12 May 1998. Readings have been held each year since then.

The Institute President, Jeremy Goford, greets Sir Michael Hart who delivered the 2003 reading.
