Tuesday 2 February 2016 17:30 - 19:00

Simon Brimblecombe, International Social Security Association

Climate change and natural resource scarcity have been identified as two of the key risks which will materially affect society in the decades ahead. Their nature and impact are difficult to assess and require an appreciation of risk and the mitigation measures that can be taken. Whilst our work will be impacted by the changes ahead, actuaries with their relevant risk management skills and experience should be key actors in the debate and discussions regarding measures to take in response to climate change and resource scarcity.

Simon Brimblecombe is a member of the International Actuarial Association’s Resource and Environment Working Group and works for an international organisation based in Geneva. He will provide an overview of the current state of play - including the implications of COP21 - and highlight not only how future trends will impact actuaries in their day to day work but also the proactive roles actuaries are already playing in responding to what is probably one of the biggest challenges facing society this century.

Refreshments will be served from 17:30 and the lecture will follow the SIAS AGM which will run from 17:45 to 18:00. There is no need to register in advance for this meeting and non-members are welcome. There will also be live tweeting available via #SIASFeb16 during the talk – please do get involved with any comments and questions for the speakers.
