Advice for qualified actuaries

The Careers Department based in Oxford maintains a register of actuaries who are happy to provide independent comment on employment to other members of the profession. Copies of the register are obtainable from:

How you can use this service

If you would like a second (or third or fourth) opinion about your career, you should call an actuary listed on the register. You should then:

  • Make it clear to the actuary that you are calling for advice based on his/her membership of the counselling panel.
  • Ask if it is convenient to speak. If it is not, ask when you should phone back.
  • Give a brief summary of information relevant to your particular interest or concern.
  • Ask the actuary for facts and opinions as appropriate to your circumstances.
  • Call other actuaries in the register (no more than three or four) for other opinions and views.

Limitations of this service

The actuaries offering this service have been asked to have an initial conversation of no more than ten minutes to determine whether they can provide guidance in this instance. If they can, then there should be a further telephone discussion or face-to-face follow-up meeting of no more than one hour.

Please remember that this is not a recruitment service so you should not expect to be offered a placement by the counsellor.
