Professionalism courses

Professionalism is a key aspect of our membership, and members are required to attend courses or events at several points in their membership to understand what this means for them.

Two-day Fellowship Professionalism Courses
(Newly qualified Fellows only)

All newly qualified Fellows are required to attend a Professionalism Course within twelve months of admission as a Fellow. The course lasts two days and consists of lectures, group discussions and case studies. Not only does the course prepare you for some of the problems that you will meet in your professional life but, more importantly, it will alert you to the existence of those problems. Additionally, the membership of each course is deliberately arranged so that those attending come from a variety of working backgrounds.

If you have difficulties with attending a course, you should write to Cath Bryson, Secretary to the Membership Committee (at Maclaurin House) (e-mail: cath.bryson@actuaries.org.uk) as soon as possible.

Dates for two-day Fellowship courses in professionalism are given below. Please note that attendance at these courses is by invitation only.

Professionalism Events for Experienced Actuaries

We also provide courses for experienced actuaries. If you are not a newly qualified actuary and would like information on these please contact the Conference Department

Professionalism Courses abroad

To date recognised versions have primarily been organised by the UK Profession, although a number of overseas professionalism events have been approved as equivalent to the UK organised ones (namely those organised by Society of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, Society of Actuaries in Ireland, Actuarial Society of South Africa, Institute of Actuaries in Australia, Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Singapore Actuarial Society).

With an increasing international membership, we would like to provide more courses in countries where our members reside. This will also have the added benefit of removing the requirement to travel to the UK for many members.

The Profession encourages local associations to run such courses, and obtain approval for them to be seen as equivalent. Organisers of Professionalism Courses outside of the UK are advised to contact Neil Hilary in advance of offering a course if they wish such events to be recognised as equivalent to those organised directly by the UK Actuarial Profession.

Note that for members working in the UK it is expected that they will attend the events organised by the UK Profession
