Terms of reference
- To be responsible to FIMC for increasing the Profession's involvement in social issues of public interest. This may include the social aspects of issues which are the primary responsibility of another Practice Board. The process will include:
1.1 Identifying, for example through continual monitoring of the media, social issues of potential public interest or concern to the Profession.
1.2 Deciding which issues have priority and devoting resources to their consideration.
1.3 Taking forward specific issues, maintaining liaison with appropriate bodies (Government departments, public agencies, relevant professions, social interest organisations, IAA/ASTIN, Groupe Consultatif, other Practice Boards etc).
1.4 Following appropriate research/liaison, developing and implementing an appropriate course of action (response to consultation document, published paper, position statement, press release etc,) seeking guidance from FIMC if appropriate.
- To raise the profile of actuaries employed in Health and other service areas.
- As a matter of routine:
3.1 To set objectives and review them annually.
3.2 To identify areas where guidance notes are warranted and to take action in accordance with Due Process.
3.3 To consider the financial policy for the Board's activities subject to the overall budgetary policy of the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries, and to be responsible for the preparation, monitoring and achievement of the budget for the Board's activities.
3.4 To direct and co-ordinate the work of any committees/groups set up to report to the Board.
Notes (applicable to all Boards)
The Board will be expected to refer to FIMC topics of the following nature:
- Whether there is a need for new guidance and the final approval of any guidance note;
- A proposal to commit the profession to a new formal responsibility;
- Fundamental matters of principle which affect the profession and matters having significant potential implications for relations with other professions;
- Areas where Board members have not been able to reach unanimity on a matter of principle;
- Matters where the Chairman considers that endorsement of FIMC should be obtained;
- Annual financial plans.
