Examples of 'Can do' activities
For illustrative purposes only, some examples of the types of activity that fall into each of the items on the Can Do List are given below. It should, however, be noted that firms are permitted to undertake an activity that is not explicitly listed below, as long as it falls into one of the five categories of regulated activities in the Can Do List. Full details can be found in the DPB Handbook.
Can do example list 1: Business clients
Advice on (including recommending) any particular investment - illustrations.
Advice on suitable pooled investment fund contracts or units in a collective investment scheme;
Advice on a pooled vehicle as part of a segregated portfolio;
Advice on suitable additional voluntary contribution contracts given to trustees of occupational pension schemes;
Advice on suitable insured scheme contracts for occupational pension schemes (including executive pension plans);
Advice on suitable immediate or deferred annuities for trustees of occupational pension schemes;
Advice given to trustees on suitable policies to be used by an occupational pension schemes for occupational income drawdown;
Advice on suitable policies to receive a forced external transfer of a divorce credit given to trustees of occupational pension schemes;
Advice on suitable UK gilts (or strips) in the context of matching the liabilities of an occupational pension scheme or insurance company;
Advice on the merits of different options and/or futures to managing a pension schemes or insurance companys exposure to a particular risk;
Advice to trustees of an occupational scheme or to an insurance company on securities issued by an insurance company as a result of demutualisation;
Advice to companies (but not individual directors) or trustees on suitable D & O policies;
Advice to an insurance company on suitable reinsurance treaties;
Advice to an employer on a suitable private health insurance policy where the employer is the policyholder (if individual employees are to be the policyholders, see Permission List 2 of DPB Handbook).
Arranging deals in investments - illustrations.
Arranging any investment arising from advice given in the examples above;
Portfolio restructuring, including the obtaining of tenders for programmed package trades in securities;
Arranging a transfer of assets from one occupational pension scheme or insurance company to another as part of a bulk transfer or merger;
Arranging a transfer of assets from one investment manager to another investment manager on behalf of an occupational pension scheme or insurance company;
Arranging for a prospective policyholder to enter into a particular insurance policy including assistance in the completion of application forms and forwarding them to the insurer.
Can do example list 2: Business clients but individual contracts

Advising employers on and arranging, again for employers, pension and insurance products to be made available to employees. Private health insurance policies where the employee is to be the policyholder are subject to this Permission List but if the employer is to be the policyholder, see Permission List 1;
Assisting employers in notifying and negotiating settlement of claims.
Can do example list 3: Individuals
Firms may undertake only the following regulated activities for such clients (and only if the other conditions in Part 3 of this handbook are met):
Advice to the extent it is limited to commenting on and/or endorsing and/or advising against any investment recommendation of an authorised third party given to the individual and does not involve the firm recommending any other particular investment.
Introducing clients to an authorised third party for the purpose of the client receiving independent advice agreeing to carry on such activity.
No other regulated activities may be carried on for such clients.
