Instructions to candidates

It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they are familiar with the instructions for sitting an exam.

Please see the following document for the complete instructions:

Summary

  • If you are unable to attend the exam for any reason, you do not need to contact the Examinations Team or the centre. Non-attendance will automatically be marked as absent.
  • Refunds of fees will only be given if a candidate notifies the Registry of his/her intention to withdraw from the examinations before the closing date or is unable to sit due to illness on the day of the examination. In this case, a medical certificate must be forwarded to Registry within four weeks of the examination taking place.
  • Candidates who believe that their examination performance has been affected by mitigating circumstances must contact the Registry in writing within three weeks of the examination.
  • Examination centre addresses are available on the website at www.actuaries.org.uk. Please ensure that you arrive in good time for the examination. Late arrivals may not be allowed to sit the examination.
  • At most centres, invigilators will inspect your exam entry permit when registering you before the examination commences. You will be required to provide photographic identification.
  • In certain large centres (including London), you will be allowed into the examination halls 10 minutes before the start of the examinations in order to read the instructions and complete the front of their booklet. Each of the CA, ST and SA stage papers will have 15 minutes reading time and notes may be made during this time.

Candidates must be aware of the following examination rules:

  • Examinations must be sat on the scheduled day, they cannot be taken on any other day.
  • Candidates are reminded that they must write their examinations in English.
  • Candidates must not start writing until instructed to do so by the supervisor, and are reminded that no notes can be made during this time.
  • No time will be allowed at the end of the examination to head up the booklet.
  • No books or notes are allowed on the examination desk.
  • All mobile phones must be switched off inside the examination hall.
  • Copies of the formulae and tables are provided during the examinations.
  • Your answers may not be written in pencil.
  • Candidates may use electronic calculators in all the examinations subject to certain conditions, detailed in the full entry instructions.
