How to apply for exemptions

The Actuarial Profession can not answer speculative requests (this includes requests sent by email, mail or telephone) asking us to grant, or to guarantee, exemptions. A completed application form including required documentary evidence must be submitted in all cases.

Application form, and fees

To apply for exemptions you must be a student member of the Faculty or the Institute of Actuaries. Please complete the application form below according to the degrees or qualifications on which you are basing your application for exemptions.

Application process

Application forms must be fully completed, and must be sent with the correct payment and the requested certified copies of documentary evidence. Incomplete application forms will not be processed and will be returned to you.

Documentary evidence of all degrees or relevant qualifications must be submitted with the application, together with official evidence of the standards achieved in those parts of the degree that are relevant. Failure to provide the correct information will result in your application being returned to you.

We do not send billing letters or invoices for exemptions; payment must be included with your application. Payment should be included for the maximum number of exemptions that you have applied for, and refunds will be made in respect of any overpayment should any of the exemptions not be granted. Please ensure that your ARN and the code JEDEXE are used as references for any BACS payment or Bank Transfer. Failure to do so will result in a severe delay in allocating the payment to your application. Payments should be free of bank charges to us. Please check with your bank about bank charges and fees, and include the necessary extra money to cover these charges.

Please ensure you have completed the checklist at the end of the application form, have completed all the relevant sections of the form and included the appropriate fee. Failure to do so will result in your application being returned to you. Incomplete applications are returned at the earliest opportunity after receipt.

Applications for exemptions will take approximately 21 working days to process from the date that we receive the complete application. This is subject to change according to the complexity of your application and the volume received at peak application times. You will be notified in writing of the result of any application for exemptions.

If you wish to enter for an exam in case you do not gain exemption in that subject, you should make an application for the exemption at least 28 working days prior to the exam closing date. For further information on exams contact the Exams Team

University or professional body documentation

If you have completed an actuarial or numerate university programme, or you have completed a numerate or financial qualification delivered by a recognised professional body which does not have an exemption agreement with the Actuarial Profession, please include copies of exam papers you sat during your programme. Also please include a copy of the Actuarial Profession's syllabus for the subjects you are applying for, and indicate on it clearly where you have covered the major objectives in the Actuarial Profession's syllabus.

  • a certified copy of your degree certificate which shows you have graduated from a university programme
  • a certified copy of the official university transcript of your marks which should include each academic year that you completed at your university .

Both the degree certificate and each page of your official university transcript should be certified by either a Fellow or Associate who is employed by your company, and who is a member of either the Faculty, Institute or an IAA recognised actuarial association.

The Fellow or Associate who certifies your documents must provide the following information on the documents:

If you work in a company which does not have any Fellows or Associates please contact exemptions@actuaries.org.uk. The External Liaison Team will advise you of alternative certification arrangements.

Certifying your documents if you are applying for ST0

If you are applying for ST0, you must include the relevant supporting documents and, if necessary, a supporting letter from a qualified actuary stating how your qualification is relevant to the actuarial field.

Important information

The Actuarial Profession strongly advises you to:

  • Apply for your exemptions as soon as possible after completing and passing one or more of the recognised qualifications
  • Check your examination history in the members’ area of the website or by contacting the examinations@actuaries.org.uk
  • Contact the exemptions@actuaries.org.uk immediately if you are concerned that our records do not hold details of exemptions you may be entitled to.

If you do not formally apply for exemptions you believe you are eligible for, or if you are eligible for an exemption but do not pay the relevant fee, your exemptions record will be incomplete, and as a result you will not appear on the qualification pass lists.
