Transition from earlier exam strategies

Assessment and transition arrangements for the 2005 education strategy

Assessment and transition arrangements
This document sets out the arrangements for the 2005 education strategy (updated Sept 2004).

  • The old 100 series subjects map onto the subjects in the new Core Technical stage.
  • The old 300 series subjects and 201 map onto the new Core Applications and Specialist Technical stages and each student will determine his or her particular mapping.
  • The old 400 series subjects map onto the new Specialist Applications stage.

Pre-2005 education strategies

General principles underlying the arrangements

  1. The ECPD Board wish to make the transition between the present strategy and incoming strategy as smooth as possible for students currently in the system.
  2. A student who passes or who has equivalent exemptions from all of A-D by 1 January 2000 will not have to take any of 101-109.
  3. A student who has joined the Institute or Faculty before 15 July 1997 will not have to take Subject 103 provided they have completed all of Subjects 101, 102 and 104-108 or their equivalents under the current system by 1 January 2000. If Subject E is also passed by 1 January 1999 this will give an exemption from Subject 109 (and 301). The tables following give more details.
  4. Students who have not taken the new subjects 103 and 109 may assume that the examinations for 201, 301-304 and the Fellowship subjects 401-404 will not require detailed knowledge of subjects 103 and 109 until the examinations in 2002.
  5. Students studying for the 300 and 400 subjects will be expected to ensure that they have a sufficient understanding of the concepts of the 100 series subjects even if they have not been required to take an examination in them. Guidance on this will be made available.
  6. The four attempts rule will be interpreted leniently for the examinations held in September 1997, April 1998, September 1998, April 1999 and September 1999. This is to help students who wish to try and finish Subjects A-D or their new equivalents during this period.

Exemptions will be given through the transitional arrangements for either paper depending on previous examinations passed. However, students taking these subjects for the first time will have to sit both papers together.
