This page gives answers to questions that have been asked about CA3 Communications.

What is the dress code for the CA3 Exam?

For the CA3 exam there is no formal dress code. Some students have chosen to dress in business attire when delivering their presentation, but this is a personal preference. No one will lose marks for not wearing a suit or tie - the main thing is that you are comfortable.

Do I need a printer for the online exam?

Some students find it useful to be connected to a printer so they can print documents as they go.

When preparing for the presentation, you will be able to review your slides from the copy saved on your desktop or upload the file to the equipment check section in the application and use this to practice.

Please remember the slides that will be used on the day are the ones that you have submitted at the end of the day. You will not be allowed to make alterations to these under any circumstances.

What happens if I fail the practical exam?

Students who fail may now opt for the retaker exam which takes place over two days. On day one you will complete an online slide presentation paper. There is a fixed time for you to download and sit the online exam - this is from 15.00-17.00. You will need a PC and access to the internet, and you may also like to have the facility to print.

Day two is the same as the second day of the full two day exam, and attendance at one of the practical exam venues is required.

Are there any text books for CA3 exam?

There are no text books or core reading specifically for this subject.

I have booked to go on a tutorial - do I need to go on it?

How will the format of the exam work? Is it similar to the CA2 exam?

  • Pre-exam work: 8 weeks before the exam dates you will be sent a pre-exam workbook containing a number of communication exercises, many of which will relate to the office environment. The guideline within the workbook is to spend 15 minutes on each section. Depending on your individual strengths and weaknesses you may take more, or less, time than recommended.
  • Day one: this will include preparation for the assessment, led by external communication specialists. The leaders will draw on material provided by you in the pre-exam workbooks. The day will conclude with a two hour exam where you will prepare slides for presentation on day two.
  • Day two: you will be individually assessed, by an actuary and a non-actuary, in a 5-10 minute oral presentation which will be filmed. You will also complete a written assessment, involving the communication of actuarial issues to a non-actuarial audience.

When will the results be issued following the exam?

The results will be issued on the Friday, 12 weeks following the exam.

Can I appeal if I fail the exam?
