Core Reading is produced jointly by the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. The purpose of Core Reading is to ensure that tutors, students and examiners have a clear shared appreciation of the requirements of the syllabus for the exams. The Core Reading gives a complete coverage of the syllabus so that the appropriate depth and breadth is apparent. In exams students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts in Core Reading; these are based on the legislation, guidance notes etc. which are in force when the Core Reading is published, i.e. on 31 May in the year preceding the exams.
Examiners have the Core Reading manual when setting the papers. The manual is updated each year to reflect changes in the syllabus, to reflect current practice and in the interests of clarity. In preparing for examinations students are recommended to work through past examination questions and will find additional tuition helpful.
Core Reading may be purchased separately from the Publications Unit at Napier House but also forms part of distance learning material provided by ActEd for the examinations.
Core reading is produced for general use and is available to Fellows and non-members.
To order core reading contact the Publications shop or go to the online shop.
