International links and overseas members

The Faculty and Institute of Actuaries (the Actuarial Profession) are UK-based international professional and educational bodies. About one third of our members live and work outside the UK. UK actuaries participate in the International Actuarial Association and the Groupe Consultatif (of Actuarial Associations in Europe).The Profession's international policy and other documents on this page give an overview of international activity.

International organisations

IAA

The IAA at www.actuaries.org is the unique international organization dedicated to the research, education and development of the profession and of actuarial associations. In order to encourage actuarial research and development in particular areas of practice, the IAA has created specialized Sections whose membership is open to various categories of members. Currently, the IAA has seven sections: ASTIN, AFIR, IACA, IAAHS, PBSS, AWF and LIFE. The section brochure [pdf] is available in pdf format on the IAA website.

The IAA sets International Actuarial Standards of Practice (IASPs). All of the IAA Standards introduced to date are Class 4 (educational) and can be accessed on the IAA's website.

Members should note that:

  • they are educational;
  • they have not been adopted, adapted or endorsed by the Actuarial Profession;
  • they do not apply to members through their membership of the Actuarial Profession;
  • they do not apply to members through their membership of the IAA;
  • should the client/employer of a member wish the member to apply an IASP in his/her work, then its application should be documented in the member's work.

The Professional Affairs Board notifies members of the existence of IASPs as and when they are introduced.

Groupe Consultatif

The Groupe Consultatif Actuariel Européenn at www.gcactuaries.org represents the actuarial associations in Europe, providing advice and opinions to the various organisations in the European Union (EU) on matters affecting the actuarial profession. It has become progressively more proactive and now exists as a focal point for communication on professional and technical matters among the European actuarial associations.

Professionalism Courses abroad

With an increasing international membership, we would like to provide more courses in countries where our members reside. This will also have the added benefit of removing the requirement to travel to the UK for many members.
