Strategic statement

The Faculty of Actuaries and the Institute of Actuaries work together as The Actuarial Profession: the professional body for actuaries in the UK.  Our aim is to support members throughout their careers so they have the skills, attributes and knowledge appropriate for the evolving needs of the UK financial sector, primarily as quantitative risk professionals.  This increases the value actuaries are able to add for their employers, their clients and the wider public.

Qualifications

High-calibre, numerate graduates study for our world-class qualifications - Associateship for the financial-sector generalist and Fellowship for the actuarial specialist.  These qualifications demonstrate thorough knowledge of actuarial principles and practical business skills.  We work with universities and other educational providers to provide varied routes to qualification and maintain a relevant and up-to-date syllabus.

Career Support

We are a valued resource for members and their employers.  In order that the knowledge and skills of actuaries remain current we facilitate timely, relevant research and deliver varied learning and skills-development events.  Our career-support services include both practice-based and cross-practice community activities. We provide networking opportunities and web-based information.  We provide support to emerging areas of practice and to help members to move into different areas.

Professional Regulation and Ethical Standards

We provide effective risk-based professional regulation of members in the UK and for those overseas members who opt for this service.  We operate an ethical code and associated Actuarial Profession Standards.  We are the licensing body for those holding reserved actuarial roles and we are a designated professional body under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.  We work with the Financial Services Authority, the Pensions Regulator and the Financial Reporting Council and its operating bodies to give the public confidence that the advice delivered by actuaries follows technical standards and meets the requirements of the regulators and legislators.  Our disciplinary arrangements are operated independently from the Faculty Council and the Institute Council and dovetail with the Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board’s scheme for public interest cases involving actuaries.

Global Influence
We play an active part in the international profession, including education and examination, knowledge development and representation.

Public Affairs and Social Policy

We contribute to the debate on public policy in financial matters and other areas where the Profession has expertise.  We speak out, when it is appropriate to do so, on financial matters, particularly where the public may be ill-equipped to understand the associated risks.  We also publish material which will help the understanding of consumers of financial services and the members of pension schemes.  As a professional body, we seek to work in an independent and objective manner when tackling public interest issues.
