Lord Turner is Chairman of the Institute for New Economic Thinking.Lord Turner is a well-known figure in UK financial services through his chairmanship of the former financial regulator, the Financial Services Authority (FSA).  During this period, Lord Turner led a significant review of the regulation of the banking system.  Many UK actuaries will be more familiar with Lord Turner’s previous role as chair of the Pensions Commission, which was a pre-cursor to the some of the most significant pension reforms in the UK in recent decades and included the introduction of automatic enrolment to pensions.

Lord Turner has combined a business career with public policy and academia.  An economist by background, he worked for McKinsey & Co for many years, building their practice in Eastern Europe and Russia in the early 1990s.  Since then, he has held a number of senior positions including Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Vice-Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe, a Non-Executive Director at Standard Chartered PLC and a Non-Executive Director of Prudential plc.

Lord Turner, a cross-bench member of the UK’s House of Lords since 2005, served as the first Chairman of its Climate Change Committee.  He has published a number of titles relating to the economy and holds positions with a number of academic institutions from London to Beijing.

He now chairs the Institute for New Economic Thinking, which seeks to advance economic thinking for the benefit of society.  With a shared interest in issues relevant to the actuarial profession, Lord Turner has previously spoken at IFoA events and the expectation is to build on this relationship as an Honorary Fellow of the IFoA.
