Current Volunteering Opportunities

The Current Pensions Review Working Party was established in 2017 to review transfer value methods and assumptions following the increase in transfer value activity with the pensions freedoms, and consider conflicts of interest between employers and trustees.

The working party now is seeking to recruit two to three additional members with an interest in transfer values.  In particular the working party would like to hear from experienced actuaries who are employed by insurers and actuaries, or other stakeholders with experience of providing individual financial advice.

Time commitment

Volunteers are asked to participate in approximately six to eight meetings per year which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  These will be held every four to six weeks and last between 60-90 minutes.  It is anticipated that volunteers will be expected to undertake research and follow up actions between meetings.

If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

Do you work in the Life practice area, particularly in a Life office, and have excellent awareness of the current issues?  Would you like to help influence the topics and speakers that are selected for the 2019 conference and to shape this premiere event?

The committee is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair and up to four new members to help deliver an exciting and thought provoking programme.  We are looking for proactive, innovative volunteers  who have ideas for making this a relevant information resource and networking platform.  We are also particularly keen to hear from you if you have international experience.

Benefits of joining the committee include:

  • an opportunity to influence the technical content of the conference
  • a chance to broaden your network
  • the opportunity to increase your awareness of current industry topics and issues
  • a chance to expand your current skills by chairing (or learning to chair) a plenary session at the conference.

The Life Board is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair.  

This volunteer will be a qualified member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) who is keen to build on the excellent foundations already created.  They should also have a desire to help shape and drive forward the Life practice area for the future.

Life is currently the largest IFoA practice area, and supports the largest proportion of research working parties and sub-committees.  For the Deputy Chair role in particular, prior involvement with other Life practice groups, such as sub-committees or working parties, would be advantageous.

The Lifelong Learning (Life Practice) Sub-committee is seeking to recruit up to two members to join them, who should be a Fellow or Associate member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).

The sub-committee oversees the Life Conference Sub-committee and runs up to eight one day workshops annually, alongside up to six evening CPD and Networking events.  Sub-committee members will be expected to lead on the development of the programme of one or more of these annual events.

The Life Standards and Consultations Sub-committee is seeking to appoint up to three members to join this group.  The sub-committee membership comprises of Life actuaries in certificate holder, technical support roles and client facing roles; and we would particularly appreciate volunteers from direct offices.

This group works with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' (IFoA’s) Executive staff to consider consultations which have been delegated to it and drafts responses as appropriate, in accordance with the IFoA’s consultations process.  The aim is to work collaboratively with other boards/consultation sub-committees as appropriate.  This ensures responses represent the wider IFoA’s views.  The group also participates with and liaises with other organisations and external working parties, as appropriate.  This sub-committee also provides input to help the IFoA ensure the development and maintenance of robust technical and ethical standards and non-mandatory resource material for the practice area.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), through the Actuarial Research Centre (ARC), is seeking to appoint an independent experienced academic to join the Review Group for its Equity Release Mortgages research project.  View the Call for Proposal.  

ABI logo  This is a research project that is jointly commissioned by the IFoA and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and is expected to run until Q1 2019.  The vacancy is suitable for members of the IFoA and for non-members with relevant experience in academic research.  Review Group meetings take place by phone and video conference and the individual can be based anywhere in the world. 

On behalf of the ABI and the IFoA (and its relevant Governance structures), the Review Group will oversee the delivery of the commissioned independent research project, to ensure it delivers output that is of high quality and is in line with expectations, producing findings that are relevant to the actuarial community and other key stakeholder groups.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in this research project.

No matter where you are based around the globe, we encourage you to volunteer to join the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) 400 Club, our online feedback group.

To volunteer for the 400 Club you must be a member of the IFoA.  

The 400 Club helps inform Directors, Council and Management Board and is a hugely valuable source of information and feedback for the IFoA.  Being a volunteer member of the 400 Club is not an onerous task.  You will complete up to six online surveys each year and by doing so you will help us to track progress against our strategic objectives and future plans.

We are seeking to hear from qualified IFoA members willing to take part in a trial of this service.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is delighted to announce the trial of an 'IFoA Buddy System'.  The introduction of this new service will be facilitated by the IFoA and it aims to provide IFoA members with access to experienced (qualified) IFoA members who are willing to share their thoughts and experiences, and have a conversation, with other members, around the globe.  

We are looking for qualified actuaries who would be willing to volunteer to take part in this trial and who would like to volunteer to share some of their experience to help other members of the profession.  Our new buddy system will offer the opportunity for members to get in touch with other members if they are looking for an independent person to talk to about career choices,  professional, or other issues. 

Please note:  Initially we are trialling this in the general insurance, finance and investment, and risk areas.  If this is successful we will expand this to all practice areas.

The service is entirely free and is based on members volunteering to provide this support.

“Some of the most rewarding moments of my career have come from being able to help someone else move forward in their own personal journey as an actuary. Two additional volunteers sought to support the care cap and means test workstream

The Health and Care Research Sub-committee is seeking two additional members to support the care cap and means test workstream of the Product Research Group.  These volunteers will be required for approximately six months to undertake modelling work.  They should ideally be IFoA Fellows or Associates with expertise in modelling and of the long term care area.

The intention is that this workstream will expand the working party analysis of the care cap and means testing thresholds to understand the impact of a wide range of different levels of care cap and thresholds on savers.  We intend to overlay the analysis with population data to see who currently wins/loses, for example what % of the population would benefit for different levels of the care cap and means testing thresholds, and to identify the potential additional cost to the Treasury.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Finance & Investment Research Sub-committee’s recently established working party is seeking expressions of interest from members of the IFoA wishing to volunteer for membership of this group.  Lay members (i.e. non IFoA members) are also welcome to join.  

The impact of the removal of GBP LIBOR could have a significant impact on a number of areas where actuaries are involved, including:

  • Insurance (where the discount rate for liabilities is based on a LIBOR swap rate)
  • Pensions (where the use of LIBOR swaps to hedge interest rate and inflation sensitivity is common)
  • Investments (where the impact on floating rate instruments linked to LIBOR will be significant)
  • Risk (where the removal of GBP LIBOR will potentially create significant issues for hedging and liquidity, amongst other risks). 

Main objective of the working party:

  • to be a source of knowledge and expertise within the IFoA on matters relating to Libor reform.

Other objectives:

  • the working party will review the proposals for the transition from LIBOR to SONIA (Sterling Overnight Interbank Average) to assess the implications for the key disciplines in which actuaries are involved
  • the working party will consider the impact of the transition proposals and the potential need for suitable changes to technical standards
  • the working party will report findings to the appropriate IFoA committees who may use this information to support discussions with regulators and other government bodies
  • the working party will make findings available to the wider actuarial community via presentations at IFoA events.

Time commitment

The Pensions Consultations Sub-committee is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair to join this group.  The sub-committee membership comprises of Pensions actuaries in technical support roles and client facing roles.

This group works with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Executive staff to consider consultations from Government, regulatory bodies, and other public interest bodies, and drafts responses as appropriate, in accordance with the IFoA’s consultations process.  The aim is to work collaboratively with other boards/consultation sub-committees as appropriate to produce comprehensive consultation responses that represent the wider IFoA views.  The sub-committee also works with external stakeholders to promote the public interest by providing their expertise and highlighting the value that actuaries can bring to society.

Time commitment and tenure 

For the Deputy Chair role, tenure is two years with a further two years to follow in the post of Chair.  Meetings are held on an ad hoc basis in London and attendance by conference call is possible.  The number of meetings is dependent on the number of pensions related consultations the sub-committee is called upon to provide expert input on.  The Executive will support the sub-committee in contributing to relevant IFoA consultation responses and attending meetings with key external stakeholders on policy matters.

The Pensions Education and Continuing Professional Development (ECPD) Sub-committee is looking to appoint one new member.  In particular, we are interested in applications from members to help ensure that we cover a varied and appropriate range of topics in our CPD Programme and Annual Pensions Conference.

This sub-committee plays an important and highly active role in shaping the content provided in the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' (IFoA's) Pensions CPD events and education.  They seek to ensure the events include a good mix of professionalism, current issues, and hot topics.  The tasks involved include:

  • creating and developing an excellent and varied pensions CPD events programme
  • content for Pensions Conference
  • identifying topics and potential speakers for specific events
  • listening to members’ feedback.

Skills and experience 

If you are a member of the IFoA, and have an enthusiasm for lifelong learning and planning CPD events, we would like to hear from you.  We are ideally looking for volunteers who have:

  • an awareness of current issues in pensions
  • an ability to come up with ideas and to identify hot topics
  • a willingness to pro-actively help organise and chair one event per year (this includes making contact with the potential speakers and securing their support)
  • a desire to develop CPD online and explore new delivery methods would also be an advantage but is not essential
  • experience of organising training events is also desirable but not essential.

 In order to broaden the expertise on the sub-committee, we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who currently work within public sector.

Time commitment

The time commitment would be two hour meetings every four to six weeks from September through to July.  Plus approximately another hour per month (more when organising a specific event) for follow up emails/calls etc.  This would equate to approximately two to three hours per month in total.  Meetings will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.

Calls will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved.  If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

The Future Pensions Landscape Working Party was established in 2017 to consider possible changes to the pensions horizon, including the proposed pensions dashboard, the triple lock on State pensions and auto-protection.

The first area being considered by the working party is the pensions dashboard and the working party is seeking to recruit additional members with experience in advising on defined contribution schemes.

Time commitment

Volunteers are asked to participate in approximately six to eight meetings per year which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  These will be held every four to six weeks and last between 60 – 90 minutes.  It is anticipated that volunteers will be expected to undertake research and follow up actions between meetings.

The Chair of the Risk Management Actuarial CRO Group is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair who will, in one year’s time, succeed him as Chair of this important group.  

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) supports and promotes the running of an actuarial profession CRO Group.  The group is made up of actuaries who are the most senior in their firm working in the risk management function.  Usually this will be a Chief Risk Officer or deputy but could also be an actuary leading a specific area of risk management.  

There is a specific vacancy for an experienced member to take on the role of Deputy Chair.  The Deputy Chair will support the Chair in encouraging the work of the group, help to shape the agenda of the group, and chair meetings when required.

The CRO Group’s objectives are to:

  • provide mutual professional support in developing risk management techniques and frameworks, especially outside of traditional actuarial areas
  • share and promote good risk management practice in relation to industry and regulatory issues 
  • offer networking opportunities to actuaries who hold CRO or very senior risk management roles within companies, including those recently appointed to such roles.

The group may also assist the Risk Management Board by:

  • contributing specific industry experience towards delivery of the Board’s objectives
  • sharing useful topical reading material
  • identifying areas for possible further research to develop actuarial risk management 
  • supporting linkages with other risk management professions 
  • enabling benchmarking of practices in relation to risk management.

Time commitment 

This group meets five time a year, and members can attend in person or by conference call, to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members irrespective of location.  These meetings last approximately 90 minutes.

We are seeking support from two to three experienced Fellows and Associates of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to volunteer to become part of the Professional Support Service (PSS) in order to strengthen our volunteer panels and to enable us to provide members with the benefit of their expertise in the interpretation of:

  • The Actuaries’ Code
  • Actuarial Profession Standards
  • Guidance Notes
  • Technical Actuarial Standards issued by the FRC.

Members may also request assistance relating to ethical dilemmas.

There is a particular need for practitioners specialising in Life, with an interest in professional ethics.  Please note this role can be delivered from anywhere around the globe, location is not a barrier.

How the PSS works

Members of the IFoA contact the PSS via an online form on the website to submit their queries and to ask for assistance on the interpretation of these professional and technical standards, or professional issues.  Queries are first considered and anonymised by members of the IFoA’s Executive staff before being circulated by email to the relevant topic specific panels of PSS experts.  

The PSS panel members share their views on the query and communicate with other panel members, predominantly via email, to discuss the key components of a suitable response before a final response is drafted by the IFoA’s Executive staff.  The draft response is then shared and considered by the panel members before a final response is agreed and sent to the enquiring member.  The PSS panel operate to a service level agreement whereby they aim to provide a full response within 15 working days.  For a more general overview of the operation of the PSS, you may wish to view the PSS User Guide.

Time commitment

The time commitment is not onerous.  The service receives on average 24 queries per year across a spread of disciplines with around half of the queries going to the professionalism panel.

This is an opportunity for members to volunteer to support the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) Policy team.

The role of the Public Policy Virtual Review Group

Our Policy team is supported by a group of experienced members, who are interested in public policy.  This volunteer resource forms a group upon whom the Policy team calls on an ad hoc basis.  The group is made up of members who are excited about the significant value actuarial skills can bring to the policy making process and who wish to use their intellectual capital to comment on outputs and, where appropriate, suggest how the evidence can be strengthened through further actuarial analysis.

Background

The IFoA has recently refreshed its Key Policy Priorities: the themes on which it will seek to engage; taking an evidence-based approach to informing policy debate.  The four priorities themes are:

  • ageing population
  • evolving risk and the future of insurance
  • investing for sustainable growth
  • resource and environment.

The themes will sit alongside a core focus on regulatory policy and, through the development of briefings, position papers and consultation responses, drive the IFoA’s engagement with policymakers and ensure the value of actuarial expertise informs policy in the public interest.

How it will work

The Policy team is working on a number of outputs across our themes, ranging from policy debates to position papers.  As a project is developed, you will be contacted to see whether you have the time to support the team by:

  • commenting on the proposed purpose, scope and content of the output
  • providing insights on valuable sources of evidence
  • reviewing and strengthening analysis
  • reviewing and commenting on conclusions/positions taken
  • reviewing and commenting on communication plans for outputs.

  • Committee work – such as looking at aspects of relevance to specific practice areas in General Insurance; Life Insurance; Pensions; Health and Care; Finance and Investment; Risk Management and Resource and Environment.

Getting involved

If you are a qualified member of the IFoA with an international remit, or international experience, please consider expressing an interest in getting involved in future opportunities.  We are ideally seeking members with existing experience of volunteering for the IFoA, though this is desirable rather than essential.  Occasionally a student member of the IFoA, who has extensive experience in a particular area, may also be able to offer support to one of the Task Forces.

When a new opportunity arises, or when a current volunteer stands down from their post, we will fill this opportunity by advertising on this volunteer vacancies webpage.  At that time a detailed Task and Person Specification will explain what is involved.  Sometimes these vacancies require to be filled fairly quickly.  In light of this requirement, and to encourage the chance for succession planning, we are keen to build up a bank of names of suitably qualified  members who may be interested in finding out more about how they could begin to get involved.

"Organisations that employ at least three qualified actuaries are encouraged to appoint a CPD Co-ordinator".  This is an Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) recommendation.

CPD Co-ordinators play a key role in effective engagement between organisations who employ our members and the IFoA. Organisations with multiple offices often appoint one per office.  Some of the large organisations appoint one CPD Co-ordinator per practice area, eg a different person for Life and General Insurance in the same organisation.

As part of their remit to engage with members living and working in Scotland, the Scottish Board run an initiative called "Knowledge Sharing Scotland" which delivers technical and professional CPD training, to small (20-40) groups of actuaries in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling, throughout the year.

The purpose is to better engage with employers of actuaries; to bring these sessions to their offices, provide networking, offer CPD, and to deliver additional events and valuable knowledge to members living and working in Scotland.

The Scottish Board are seeking to hear from individuals who would be prepared to volunteer to support this resource either as:  

  • a speaker at a future event, and or 
  • to host a lunchtime event in their office

This is a new opportunity to support the quality assurance of the IFoA’s research outputs.

Background:

As a Learned Society, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) has an active research agenda through volunteer working parties and commissioned research projects, primarily under the remit of the seven Practice Boards or the Research and Thought Leadership Committee (RTLC).  Research topics include all practice areas, as well as emerging themes for the actuarial profession. 

All IFoA research seeks to be open access, thus freely available to a variety of audiences worldwide.  Therefore, it is important that research outputs are of the highest quality.

Research outputs typically include sessional meeting papers, other published research papers, conference presentations and also journal articles.  Dissemination can be through sessional meetings, conferences and other events; journals and publications, including the British Actuarial Journal and Annals of Actuarial Science; the IFoA website and external channels.

This Volunteer Role:

The IFoA is seeking to build up a pool of volunteers who have an interest in research and are in a position to review research outputs on an ad hoc basis.  The volunteers will form a virtual group know as the Research Peer Review Pool.

The Worshipful Company of Actuaries (WCA) has developed excellent contacts with the Royal Institution (RI), through sponsorship of Masterclasses for schoolchildren, and other initiatives.  Masterclasses are interactive, experiential and lend themselves to just the sort of mathematical material actuaries can provide.

The Company wishes to develop a Financial Mathematics module for an RI Masterclass.  A Masterclass lasts for 2 hours and, in theory,2 modules are required; one to cater for age group 13-15 and the other for age 15+. In practice, there will be considerable overlap between the two age groups.

The first stage of this project is to design the modules (delivery of them will be a separate second stage).  We have already identified two possible sources of material which could be used as a starting point for this purpose.

Accordingly, WCA is seeking a small number of volunteers, based in the UK, to form a Stage 1 working party to design the modules.

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic, innovative and committed volunteers to join the General Insurance Reserving Oversight Committee (GIROC).
 
If you are a member of the IFoA who has a real desire to help influence the outputs of the General Insurance practice area, predominantly focused on reserving, and to build on the work carried out over the last few years by GIROC please consider offering your support.

GIROC represents the interests of GI reserving actuaries.  Our remit covers horizon scanning, education and communication on reserving issues.  We are an active committee and have covered or are covering many topics, such as SII, IFRS17, automation, granular reserving, communicating uncertainty, stochastic reserving , amongst many others.  You can see details of our current and past working parties, and the kind of work we are doing on our webpage.

Requirements

The successful volunteer(s) must meet the following requirements:

  • work proactively to ensure the Terms of Reference are at the focus of activities

Time commitment

GIROC meetings are usually held in London and usually last for two hours.  It is possible to join the meeting by video conference or by phone if necessary. If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.   The minimum time commitment equates to one day, bi-monthly, for meeting plus approximately one day, bi-monthly, to read papers but volunteers would be expected to contribute further to the work of the committee where possible.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is seeking proactive and experienced volunteers to join the General Insurance (GI) Education Team. This is your opportunity to help the profession by developing syllabus materials for the next generation of actuaries.

The GI Education Team will support the GI Module Lead in reviewing and developing the GI syllabus, core reading and assessment material. They will ensure the module is kept current, relevant and innovative in its thinking. Team members will be asked to carry out their responsibilities in a proper and impartial manner, in accordance with IFoA governance.

We are looking for volunteers with experience of all areas of general insurance including pricing, reserving and capital modelling.

Time Commitment
The expected time commitment is 20-30 hours per year.

The IFoA syllabus is updated annually and signed off by the Education Committee (which reports to the Lifelong Learning Board) in January for the following year with the module content prepared for publishing in June each year. Assessment materials are all signed off by the end of February for that year. Volunteers will be required to attend regular module review meetings (attendance can be via phone or video conference) and undertake actions, including reviewing and writing relevant material.

The Chair of the UK Asbestos working party, Robert Brooks, is seeking to recruit an additional member to assist in the production of a new insurance market estimate.

The UK Asbestos working party was re-established in 2008 with objectives to assist actuaries in reserving for asbestos-related liabilities.  In January 2010, it released its estimates of the future cost of UK asbestos-related claims to the insurance industry.  Since the 2009 insurance market estimate, the working party has been monitoring the experience of asbestos-related claims and mesothelioma deaths.  It has now decided that its insurance market estimate should be updated to take into account the last 5 years of experience.

Volunteers with experience of asbestos reserving, are encouraged to get involved.  Applications are welcome from both members of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and non-members.

Time commitment

It is estimated that members will be asked to devote two days per month to the research, developing models and writing up findings for this working party.  Included in this, volunteers will be expected to attend (or dial in) to the monthly or quarterly meetings (depending on the reporting cycle of the working party).

The overarching objective of the Flood Working Party is to be a source of knowledge and expertise within the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) on matters relating to flood.  The working party’s research has a strong UK focus.

The Chair of this working party, Philippa King, is seeking to recruit additional members to research this topic, particularly at analyst level.

If you are a member of the IFoA or a suitably qualified non member, who has a passion for the subject and the time to contribute, please consider volunteering for this working party.  It is envisaged that this working party will comprise of a broad mix of skills, and in particular, an awareness of customer interaction with insurance and of public policy or, capital and reserving expertise at analyst level, are sought

Specific objectives:

1. to develop the profession’s position on UK flooding – including, but not limited to, insurance matters (for example affordability, availability and issues such as resilience and planning)

2. to produce reference material for UK actuaries when considering flood in pricing, capital modelling, reserving or related areas such as:

  • when selecting and using a model
  • variety in flood events
  • climate change.

Building on the body of previous work, the Flood working party will continue to:

1. improve the understanding of flood risk amongst the industry, government and public by:

  • producing papers at GIRO conferences (and digestible summary) to raise awareness amongst the profession of flood related issues
  • making the working party findings available to the wider insurance community and to inform debate, via participation in third party events
  • distributing press releases in co-ordination with the relevant IFoA working parties and the IFoA’s Public Affairs team

2. gather data and opinions from the industry to inform the above

3. work with industry bodies, including Flood Re, to report on market developments (availability and affordability of flood insurance).

Towards the Optimal Reserving Process Working Party explores the governance and design of existing processes within reserving, ensuring that principles-based guidance (small ‘g’) is given.  Previously, the working party worked to develop practical solutions to current issues within reserving.  Examples of their output can be explored on the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Towards the Optimal Reserving Process webpage.

Chair, William Diffey, seeks to reinvigorate this working party by the appointment of additional proactive and experienced volunteers.  The opportunity is open to both members of the IFoA and non-members.  In particular, we are keen to hear from those practicing in general insurance with detailed reserving experience (preferably relating to a number of organisations).  The successful volunteers will have the opportunity to influence the scope of the working party’s future output and direction of travel.

Objectives:

  • work in conjunction with the Periodical Payment Orders (PPO) Working Party to ensure that key messages of interest to the industry, consumers, the press or government bodies are appropriately aired
  • collect additional data from within the UK market or from other sources as the working party sees fit
  • maintain appropriate standards with respect to competition law – in particular no individual company actuary will see any data other than aggregate market data and there will be no discussion around pricing related matters
  • all data processing is being hosted and anonymized by Willis Towers Watson.

The working party aims to include a representative from each organisation that handles UK based General Insurance (GI) third party data.  While this is an individual volunteer appointment, the individual volunteers appointed to this working party are appointed to represent their organisation.

This role uses your professional practice area experience to provide analysis and assessment of investigation cases as a Panel Member.  Sitting as a Panel of three, Actuary Panel Members are asked to evaluate the investigation evidence and determine the appropriate next step within the process.  Panels consist of lay and actuary members and are supported by Legal Advisers and the Judicial Committees Secretary, who is a professional regulatory clerk.  We match all cases at the outset to a Panel Member according to both their skills, experience and the expected time commitment.   Full induction and training is provided at the outset and on an ongoing basis.

Each session, in the region of 300 Markers are required by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Engagement and Learning Directorate to support the delivery and assessment marking of the IFoA qualification.

We are now looking for expressions of interest from suitably experienced individuals to join our bank of Markers.  As a Marker you will be part of a subject team and will report to the Chief Examiner or Lead Examiner. You will be required to work to pre-set deadlines and attend the session marking meeting (specific dates will be advised prior to appointment).  Previous marking experience would be advantageous for the role but is not essential.

Independent Examiners are appointed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to assist in monitoring the quality and standards of university programmes with IFoA exemption agreements.

They play a vital role in ensuring that the exemption recommendation process runs smoothly and make a positive impact on maintaining and developing university programmes which have agreements with the IFoA.

This enables us to demonstrate to the Financial Reporting Council Conduct Committee as well as other stakeholders and customers, that the quality and standards of alternative routes to Qualification are equivalent to the Profession’s exams.

This is a senior role with a high level of responsibility and as such we take considerable care in the selection process.

We are seeking to hear from Fellows, Associates and Honorary Fellows who have:

  • experience in actuarial practice and/or are involved in teaching actuarial science programmes
  • relevant experience in setting and marking the IFoA’s exams, or equivalent university programme or professional qualification exams
  • a good working knowledge of the IFoA’s current exam syllabus and structure and awareness of the latest developments.

It is important to us to have the right balance of practitioners and academics each year and therefore we are keen to build up a good bank of support upon which we can draw.

Inspire the next generation to consider an actuarial career.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is looking for members who want to promote an actuarial career to enthusiastic young people.

If you want the opportunity to get out into your community or to visit a university and help guide the next generation in a fulfilling and diverse career, as an actuary, then this is the volunteer vacancy for you.

A Career Ambassador is a rewarding opportunity, which can take you to all sorts of interesting places.  We are seeking volunteers to speak at schools, colleges and universities about an actuarial career.  The IFoA attends over 15 career fairs and talks annually and Career Ambassadors help represent the IFoA and the industry as a whole at these events.

How it works

Once confirmed, you will be added to a bank of names of Career Ambassadors.  You will then, as opportunities arise, be sent an email by the Careers Team.  These opportunities might be invitations to attend a careers fair, or to give an A-level student a call to explain to him or her what an actuary does.

We also hope you will pro-actively look for opportunities in your area.  When you identify an opportunity we ask you to let our Career team know, so we can provide you with up to date material to support your talk.

To volunteer to act as a Career Ambassador you should either be a qualified actuary or a student member in employment working towards your qualification.  You need to be confident enough to be able to talk about your route into the profession and your current role.  You should also be in a position to know a bit about the current exams, how the profession works and what we do.

Providing financial education through the Livery Schools Link, the London-based Worshipful Company of Actuaries has teamed up with Teaching Business Enterprise and Employability in Schools (BEE) to provide financial education to young people. Currently running schemes in two primary schools - one in Tower Hamlets in London, and one in Dorking in Surrey.

Each scheme comprises six sessions across the Summer and Autumn terms. Four of the sessions are conducted in the classroom at the school and one at the Bank of England. The final session is a Dragon’s Den style event hosted at local offices. Each session lasts up to 2 hours. Ideally volunteers would be able to attend more than one of these sessions to help to provide some continuity for the children. The schools may require DBS checks for volunteers.
 
If you are a member of the IFoA and live and/or work in, or near, London or Dorking, please consider volunteering to share your enthusiasm and your knowledge of finance with young people in our schools.

This is an excellent opportunity for Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) members with experience in our exams to get involved in providing support to our student members, around the globe. 

In 2016 Actuaries Without Borders (AWB®) launched a global mentorship program, covering remote exam tutoring for professional actuarial exams, and providing the following benefits to the global society:

  1. assistance in the development of the actuarial profession where there is a lack of such resources
  2. contributes to the awareness of the actuarial profession and the spread of the actuarial education, by encouraging qualified actuaries and academics across the world to volunteer in global mentoring, including actuarial exam tutoring, through a convenient platform available around the clock.

This program is not intended to provide free consulting service nor non-actuarial coaching.  It is restricted to non-commercial use.

The program has expanded rapidly following its launch, and to meet the demand of different mentees AWB are currently looking for individuals to volunteer to become mentors and also for someone to take on the role of deputy project manager.

How does this benefit you?  Having an SEC:

  • gives you direct communication with our Engagement and Learning Directorate
  • will ensure you are one of the first to receive important information and updates about any changes which may effect your students
  • allows your organisations’ voice to be heard and for your organisation to have your say about a hot topic (such as the Education Strategy Review)
  • provides you with support to ensure students in your organisation are supported.

An SEC does not need to be a qualified actuary but they do need to be someone who is willing to play a proactive role in two-way communication between the IFoA and the employer.

As this role involves supporting students, it is not possible for a current student to become an SEC.
