Would you like to volunteer to Chair the Measuring Uncertainty Qualitatively Working Party?  We are particularly keen to hear from anyone involved in GI reserving and global colleagues, with a passion for qualitative reserve risk and leadership skills.  

Background

The Measuring Uncertainty Qualitatively (MUQ) Working Party is developing reserve uncertainty thinking beyond percentiles and bootstrap style techniques. 

The 2014 GIROC survey highlighted the wide differences in approaches to measuring and communicating uncertainty in reserves that were employed in the UK and identified this as an area that would benefit from further research.  The working party is progressing through the fourth stage of meeting their objectives: developing material around their reserve uncertainty framework to broaden thinking on reserve risk assessments provided for capital models.  Our focus is on the reserving side.

The working party will soon need a new Chair to lead the group’s research and communication of results.  The opportunity is open to both members of the IFoA and non-members.  In particular, we are keen to hear from those practicing in general insurance with reserving experience, ideally with some experience of leading a working party or similar endeavor before, although this is not necessary.  The successful volunteer will influence the working party’s output and lead the future direction of travel.

MUQ are currently researching how their established Reserve Uncertainty Framework could be used with scenario analysis, individual claims reserving and bootstrapping for reserve-risk  assessment, as well as other topical issues such as IFRS 17.  The working party has submitted a proposal to present at GIRO and produces a range of outputs. 

Time commitment

As volunteer Chair, you will be asked to devote three to six hours per month to lead the working party. This includes chairing a monthly meeting, which is by conference call to allow wide participation.  It will also include representing the working party by participating at any subsequent sub-committee meetings, where necessary.

If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if you are based close to another member of the working party, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place. 

Volunteers are also asked, where possible, to contribute to presentations.  This is by mutual convenience with no requirement to attend any specific conference and there are opportunities in various locations in the UK, with many of the presentations being in London.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, (IFoA), is seeking to appoint a proactive volunteer to join the Risk Management (RM) Board.
The RM Board is championing exciting initiatives to grow a vibrant and thriving risk community and is looking for a member who would like to be a part of this.

Specifically the Board is looking for:-

A member who would be able to take the lead on securing the resources needed  for the RM Board’s priorities:

  • working with other RM Board members to define what resources and capabilities the RM Board needs to be successful, and to ensure that this resource model is kept current
  • engaging collaboratively with the IFoA executive to raise awareness of the need for these resources, identifying who can help and how
  • coordinating with the executive to ensure that improvements are delivered when needed by the Board, where possible

Time Commitment and Tenure:  
The appointment is for a period of three years.  Attendance would be required at five Board meetings per year which are two hours in length and are usually held in Holborn Gate, London but attendance can be facilitated via video conferencing.  There would be some work expected in between meetings.

Would you like to become the Co-Editor for the British Actuarial Journal and join the Editorial Board?

The British Actuarial Journal (BAJ) is an online, Open Access publication which contains current practitioner research and discussion on actuarial topics. It acts as the platform for outputs from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Sessional Research Programme, including papers and transcripts of discussions.

The Editor, Fellow Cathy Robertson, and IFoA Head of Research and Knowledge, Sarah Mathieson, are seeking to appoint a Co-Editor to join the BAJ Editorial Board.  The position is open to all those with the relevant skills and experience, location is not a barrier as participation in meetings is via conference call/video conference call.

Key Tasks

To support the Editor of the journal in the management and production of the journal, maintaining the integrity and reputation of the journal in keeping with the IFoA role as a learned society, and to support the function of the Assistant Editors.

Key skills and experience

It would be highly desirable if the Co-Editor has some prior experience of acting as part of an editorial team.

The Co-Editor would be required to demonstrate the following:  

  • a working knowledge of the processes and issues involved in meeting publication deadlines
  • well organised and able to work to deadlines; excellent written English language skills; attention to detail; the ability to follow and apply editorial guidelines
  • strong working knowledge of the actuarial profession and IFoA research, and ability to apply this in the context of editing and reviewing content.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) Scottish Board’s purpose is to encourage development of the actuarial community, advancement of academic development and a raised public profile in Scotland.

The Scottish Board is seeking to co-opt up two or possibly three members to join the Scottish Board to complement the skills and experience of the existing Board members.

The IFoA will be organising the sixth IFoA Asia conference to be held on 24-25 June 2020 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The conference will be a cross-practice actuarial event, and we are looking to appoint volunteers to join the Technical Content Committee to help source and secure relevant technical content for the programme.

We would like to appoint a Conference Chair to work in partnership with the IFoA executives and President-elect, Tan Suee Chieh, and to lead the Technical Content Committee through their selection of relevant speakers and topics for the conference.  In addition, we would like to appoint practice area Technical Content Chairs, plus practice area Technical Content Committee members, who will be responsible for the selection of speakers and topics for their particular practice area.

There will be eight (maximum) committee meetings in total.  The first meeting of the Technical Content Committee will be held, via conference call, at the end of November 2019.

We are looking to appoint at least four members of the committee who are based in South-East Asia, or have substantial experience working in this region.  Each of the practice area Chairs will be required to make sound decisions on the topics for their practice areas, however, the Conference Chair will have the final overview decision to ensure we get a balanced technical programme across the entire conference.

The Practising Certificates Committee (PCC) is seeking to appoint a member to join the Pensions Panel to consider applications for Scheme Actuary Practising Certificates.

Expertise required

The current Chair of the PCC, John Jenkins, is seeking to hear from members who are Fellows of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) (qualified for at least three years) and who have knowledge and up to date experience in Scheme Actuary work coupled with broader experience of pensions work to contrast Scheme Actuary work against.  Ideally this person will also be a current, or recent, holder of a Scheme Actuary Practising Certificate.

Time commitment

Approximately, on average, ten hours per month, maybe more in December and January.  The PCC approve applications by email, and only if a case needs discussed will they meet by conference call.  There are two review meetings each year which are held in London.  Attendance at these meetings can be by conference call, if preferred.

Tenure

It is hoped that members of this committee will be happy to take up a tenure of at least three years.  Tenure is reviewable on a regular basis depending on changing circumstances, participation and performance in PCC matters.

If you are a Fellow of the IFoA, we encourage you to volunteer to join our pool of Investigation Actuaries.  This is not an onerous role; you remain in control of when you get involved; full training is provided; and it not only allows the IFoA to benefit from your experience but also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the application of the Actuaries’ Code in practice.

Details

The Pool of Investigation Actuaries (IA Pool) is a group of volunteer members who assist with the technical aspects of allegations of professional misconduct against members of the IFoA.  The IFoA is currently seeking additional volunteers to be appointed to the IA Pool. 

In particular we would welcome applications from Scheme Actuaries, and from IFoA Fellows working in General and Life Insurance. Also, given the increasing international membership of the IFoA, we are very keen to appoint IAs based outside the UK.

Why get involved 

Allegations about professional misconduct against members are dealt with under the IFoA’s Disciplinary and Capacity for Membership Schemes (The Scheme).  An investigation team is appointed to each allegation.  This comprises an experienced Case Manager and an IA invited from the IA Pool based on their experience, area of specialism and availability. 

The principal role of the IA is to identify and address the actuarial/technical issues within the allegation and provide technical support to the Case Manager.  The time commitment depends on the complexities of the case and whether it is dealt with at the Adjudication stage or goes forward to a full Tribunal hearing.

Training

Each IA will receive initial training, provided by the Case Manager, when an IA is  appointed to their first allegation and there is also general training, every 18 months or so, for all IAs.  This training may count towards relevant CPD.  Such training may be delivered by webinar or by way of video conference.

In particular they find it valuable to be aware of the types of conduct issues that the Scheme deals with so they can take that awareness back to their day to day work to ensure colleagues can learn from it. 

The existing Chair of the IA Pool is Jacqui Reynolds FFA.  She commented:

The IA role is a very important and necessary role.  Without volunteers the Disciplinary and Capacity for Membership Schemes would be unable to function smoothly as it relies on the technical expertise of the IA in many of its case.  The role is not usually onerous, and there is flexibility in when input is required.  If work capacity issues make it difficult to take on a case at a particular time then it can be scheduled to another IA.  This is great way to give something back to the profession and at the same time to be aware of the type of issues being raised through its disciplinary process.

This is an opportunity for members to volunteer to support the joint Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) Working Party, which will be developing a guide for users of climate-related financial disclosures that have been prepared in line with the recommendations of the Taskforce for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). 

Background

The IFoA has recently established a joint working party with the IEMA.  The purpose will be to create a guide for users of climate-related financial disclosures that have been prepared in line with the recommendations of the TCFD.  The guide will:

  • support user ability to understand the different sections in the disclosure
  • understand what information the disclosure should include
  • identify key questions to assist further probing the disclosure. 

The guide will also be used for the purposes of promoting the skills of IFoA and IEMA members in developing meaningful and decision useful climate-related financial disclosures.

How it will work

The joint working party will be developing a guide for users of climate-related financial disclosures that have been prepared in line with the recommendations of the TCFD.  As the guide is developed, you will be contacted to see whether you have the time to support the team by:

  • reviewing and strengthening analysis
  • reviewing and commenting on conclusions/positions taken
  • reviewing and commenting on communication plans for outputs.

It is anticipated that various drafts of the report will require review between September and December 2019.

Objective/aims

The Life Lifelong Learning Sub-committee is seeking a volunteer to work with them to put together the programme for the bi-annual Mortality and Longevity Seminar, due to take place in June 2020 in London, and to chair the event.  This event is very popular with between 90-150 delegates attending.

The role will involve:

  • producing the wording for the ‘call for speakers’, with the sub-committee
  • reviewing the submissions from the ‘call for speakers’ for the event, and selecting the final programme
  • approaching well known industry or academic speakers direct, for topics with no suitable submissions in the response to the ‘call for speakers’
  • liaising with speakers on the technical details of their presentations for the event
  • peer reviewing the slide packs before the event
  • chairing the event on the day, including acting as a facilitator, delivering introductions, having a timekeeping role, and prompting questions from the floor
  • reviewing the feedback after the event, with the sub-committee.

Experience/skills/background desirable

The volunteer should:

  • be a Fellow or Associate of the IFoA
  • ideally, be working in the Life, Pensions or Health and Care sector
  • have extensive experience in the Mortality and Longevity space
  • as Chair, you will have a high profile role at this event.  We are therefore looking for volunteers who are confident and engaging speakers and/or who have some experience of acting as a Chair at large events and/or forums.

Time commitment:

  • attendance at several telephone conferences of up to one hour, between November and March 2020
  • peer review of documents and slide packs before the event (likely to be in April or May 2020)
  • there may be a requirement to liaise on technical details, by email or telephone, with some of the speakers at the event.

In return, the volunteers will:

  • receive a complimentary ticket to attend the seminar
  • be provided (from the Executive team) with excellent professional management support and assistance as required and will be able to enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped shaped advancement of actuarial science in the mortality and longevity space
  • be offered guidance and support as to best practice, when chairing the CPD event

To volunteer for the 400 Club you must be a member of the IFoA. 

The 400 Club helps inform Directors, Council and Management Board and is a hugely valuable source of information and feedback for the IFoA.  

Being a volunteer member of the 400 Club is not an onerous task.  You will be asked to complete up to six online surveys each year and by doing so you will help us to track progress against our strategic objectives and future plans.

We are seeking to hear from qualified IFoA members willing to take part in this service.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is delighted to announce an 'IFoA Buddy System'.  The introduction of this new service will be facilitated by the IFoA and it aims to provide IFoA members with access to experienced (qualified) IFoA members who are willing to share their thoughts and experiences, and have a conversation, with other members, around the globe.  

We are looking for qualified actuaries who would be willing to volunteer to take part and who would like to volunteer to share some of their experience to help other members of the profession.  Our new buddy system will offer the opportunity for members to get in touch with other members if they are looking for an independent person to talk to about career choices, professional, or other issues. 

Please note: Initially we were trialling this in the general insurance, finance and investment, and risk areas.  As this trial was successful we are expanding this to all practice areas.

The service is entirely free and is based on members volunteering to provide this support.

We are seeking support from two to three experienced Fellows and Associates of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to volunteer to become part of the Professional Support Service (PSS) in order to strengthen our volunteer panels and to enable us to provide members with the benefit of their expertise in the interpretation of:

  • The Actuaries’ Code
  • Actuarial Profession Standards
  • Guidance Notes
  • Technical Actuarial Standards issued by the FRC.

Members may also request assistance relating to ethical dilemmas.

There is a particular need for practitioners specialising in Life, with an interest in professional ethics.  Please note this role can be delivered from anywhere around the globe, location is not a barrier.

How the PSS works

Members of the IFoA contact the PSS via an online form on the website to submit their queries and to ask for assistance on the interpretation of these professional and technical standards, or professional issues.  Queries are first considered and anonymised by members of the IFoA’s Executive staff before being circulated by email to the relevant topic specific panels of PSS experts.  

The PSS panel members share their views on the query and communicate with other panel members, predominantly via email, to discuss the key components of a suitable response before a final response is drafted by the IFoA’s Executive staff.  The draft response is then shared and considered by the panel members before a final response is agreed and sent to the enquiring member.  The PSS panel operate to a service level agreement whereby they aim to provide a full response within 15 working days.  For a more general overview of the operation of the PSS, you may wish to view the PSS User Guide.

Time commitment

The time commitment is not onerous.  The service receives on average 24 queries per year across a spread of disciplines with around half of the queries going to the professionalism panel.

Student volunteers are one of our most valuable assets.  We are currently seeking enthusiastic and committed students from our global community who are ready to get involved to help shape the exam experience for future students.  As regional representatives, you will work with us and other forum members on future decisions or considerations in regards to exam process, structures, administration and other key aspects of the student experience.

Being a regional representative for us is one of the most impactful ways to contribute to your profession and make positive change.  We have six global forums to ensure that you can have your say, no matter where you are located.

The areas where we are currently seeking regional representatives to help us are:

  • The Americas
  • Europe (excluding the UK, Channel Islands and Ireland)*

*Students from the UK, Channel Islands and Ireland are represented by the Student Consultative Forum.

Depending on the availability and interest levels, we are prepared to establish other forums.  Please contact the Quality Team to discuss this further.

In order to be an area representative you MUST:

  • be a student member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)
  • be available in the month after the exams (May/June and October/November) when the forums will take place
  • be able to attend virtual meetings, using either phone conferencing or other digital collaborative platforms.  Face-to-face meetings may also be considered
  • have access to a computer and intranet as this role will require conducting student consultations during the period directly after exams.

This opportunity is open to all IFoA students; however, representatives will only be able to apply to represent the forum in their geographical location of work.  Please contact the Quality Team if you are not sure which forum you should join.

"Organisations that employ at least three qualified actuaries are encouraged to appoint a CPD Co-ordinator".  This is an Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) recommendation.

CPD Co-ordinators play a key role in effective engagement between organisations who employ our members and the IFoA. Organisations with multiple offices often appoint one per office.  Some of the large organisations appoint one CPD Co-ordinator per practice area, eg a different person for Life and General Insurance in the same organisation.

As part of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) international strategy of proactive engagement, we speak up on relevant matters through our representation on both the International Actuarial Association (IAA) and the Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE).

IFoA members who are appointed by the IFoA to represent the IFoA in this way, do so via a range of activities which include focusing on:

  • education issues
  • professionalism
  • assisting new associations
  • technical committee work – such as looking at aspects of relevance to specific practice areas in General Insurance; Life Insurance; Pensions; Health and Care; Finance and Investment; Risk Management and Resource and Environment.
  • assisting with the administration of the IAA

These may take the form of a short term task force or working group; attendance at a specific conference; or committee membership on behalf of the IFoA.

Getting involved

If you are a qualified member of the IFoA with an international remit, or international experience, please consider expressing an interest in getting involved in future opportunities.

We are ideally seeking members with existing experience of volunteering for the IFoA, though this is desirable rather than essential.  

Occasionally a student member of the IFoA, who has extensive experience in a particular area, may also be able to offer support to one of the task forces.

How the pool works

Once appointed to the pool, your details, and information about your area of expertise and interest, will be retained by the IFoA.  When a new opportunity arises, or when a current volunteer stands down from their post, we will advertise the details to those who have indicated a relevant interest, or who have suitable experience.  At that time a detailed Task and Person Specification will explain what is involved.  Sometimes these vacancies need to be filled fairly quickly and often require specialist technical input.  In light of this requirement, and to encourage the chance for succession planning, we are keen to build up a pool of suitably qualified members who are willing to offer this ad hoc support, subject to their availability of the time.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is seeking to appoint proactive and innovative volunteers to represent the Risk Management Research and Thought Leadership Sub-committee at the IFoA. This sub-committee helps shape and drive forward research in the Risk Management Practice Area.

The sub-committee is keen to maintain a diverse set of perspectives and so is looking for members with a range of experience and contacts to ensure that it stays abreast of key issues across the disciplines and geographies, and the hot topics being discussed in the broader risk space. These insights will help to push forward more member-led research via working parties and, potentially, specific funded research initiatives. In addition to hearing from individuals who already have significant experience, the Chair would also like to hear from individuals who have some experience but would be willing to volunteer to participate actively as a way to extend their knowledge. The Chair of the sub-committee is also keen to ensure succession planning and so candidates who would be interested in taking on a lead role in the future should make this known in their application.

The GI Standards and Consultations Sub-committee is seeking to appoint a member to join this group.  The role would suit a non-life actuary who can offer technical expertise and has an interest in public policy.

What is involved

Through the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) consultation process our members advise policymakers on regulatory and legislative decisions that will have a long lasting effect on the public and the industries that actuaries work in.  The IFoA responds to numerous consultations that inform both the making of policy and its implementation. 

You will work with the IFoA’s Executive staff to consider consultations from Government, regulatory bodies, and other public interest bodies, and drafts responses as appropriate.  

The aim is to work collaboratively with other boards/consultation sub-committees as appropriate to produce comprehensive consultation responses that represent the views of the IFoA and support the public interest.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is seeking proactive and experienced volunteers to join the General Insurance (GI) Education Team. This is your opportunity to help the profession by developing syllabus materials for the next generation of actuaries.

The GI Education Team will support the GI Module Lead in reviewing and developing the GI syllabus, core reading and assessment material. They will ensure the module is kept current, relevant and innovative in its thinking. Team members will be asked to carry out their responsibilities in a proper and impartial manner, in accordance with IFoA governance.

We are looking for volunteers with experience of all areas of general insurance including pricing, reserving and capital modelling.

Time Commitment
The expected time commitment is 20-30 hours per year.

The IFoA syllabus is updated annually and signed off by the Education Committee (which reports to the Lifelong Learning Board) in January for the following year with the module content prepared for publishing in June each year. Assessment materials are all signed off by the end of February for that year. Volunteers will be required to attend regular module review meetings (attendance can be via phone or video conference) and undertake actions, including reviewing and writing relevant material.

A Study of Major Hurricanes (Hurricanes) Working Party is currently seeking to appoint an additional member to join this working party to fulfil the volunteer role of minute taker for the group.  

This role is ideally suited to a qualified or student member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) who has an insurance, pensions or legal background.  This is an excellent opportunity to support this working party and at the same time to gain experience being involved in a working party; to network with the existing members, and to increase your knowledge and experience in this area.

The successful candidate will participate in the working party meetings every two weeks, which are held by conference call, and will minute the discussions and actions as well as circulate these round the group. 

Background

North Atlantic hurricanes are a key peril for most insurers/reinsurers. Key objective of the working party is to connect the catastrophe models to the commercial and actuarial world

Our work is designed to enable the key decision makers (C-suite) in the business understand and take underwriting, actuarial and risk management decisions, especially after the occurrence of major hurricanes  

The working party meets every two weeks and is expected to produce a written report of the findings of their work.  They present at industry events as appropriate.

Time commitment

The PPO Working Party is currently seeking a new Chair to lead the working party.  This includes driving the working party forward, chairing the meetings and representing the working party at committees and events, where necessary.  This role is suited to both members and non-members who have an insurance, pensions or legal background. 

The PPO Working Party meets monthly, by conference call, and is expected to produce a written report of the findings of their work and to present at industry events as appropriate. 

Skills and experience

As Chair, you will lead the group’s discussions and the communication of the output.  For this role, we are ideally looking for a volunteer with experience of leading, or working within, a working party or committee environment with experience in PPOs.  While this is not essential it is important that the Chair should have demonstrable experience in their ability to run the working party and to help progress its key objectives. 

The Chair will drive the work streams forward, taking responsibility for one particular work stream.  It is important for the Chair to maintain the momentum of a working group comprising members from a variety of different locations, including internationally.  Previous experience of leading a working party is not necessary, but the ability to encourage discussion and drive action is key.

Time commitment

As Chair, you will typically be expected to commit three to six hours per month, including preparing for and participation in the working party meetings.  You may also be required to attend other GI committee meetings and events as a representative of the working party.

The IFRS 17 for General Insurance Working Party are looking for volunteers with a variety of experience and new ideas to join this Working Party.

IFRS 17 Standard for Insurance Contracts is expected to be effective from 1 January 2022. The new Standard will apply to all insurers that have IFRS reporting requirements and will mean potentially significant changes for all general insurers falling in this category. The impact of IFRS 17 will be far reaching from data needs to modelling requirements, all the way through to financial reporting.

Time Commitment   

Volunteers in this working party commit three to four hours of their time, per month.  

This includes the participation in a monthly meeting of the working party, which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  Conference calls will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved.  If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

In addition to the above, the working party also coordinate activities with other IFRS17 working parties within the IFoA (e.g. those with a Life Insurance focus) and with other international actuarial associations to share developments.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA’s) Third Party Working Party investigate emerging claim trends in third party motor insurance.

Objectives:

  • work in conjunction with the Periodical Payment Orders (PPO) Working Party to ensure that key messages of interest to the industry, consumers, the press or government bodies are appropriately aired
  • collect additional data from within the UK market or from other sources as the working party sees fit
  • maintain appropriate standards with respect to competition law – in particular no individual company actuary will see any data other than aggregate market data and there will be no discussion around pricing related matters
  • all data processing is being hosted and anonymized by Willis Towers Watson.

Membership of the working party

The working party aims to include a representative from each organisation that handles UK based General Insurance (GI) third party data.  While this is an individual volunteer appointment, the individual volunteers appointed to this working party are appointed to represent their organisation. 

Time commitment and participation

Approximately one day per month made up of attendance at a monthly meeting by conference call lasting approximately one and a half hours and follow up research and actions between meetings.

The Pensions Lifelong Learning Sub-committee is looking to appoint new members.  In particular, we are interested in applications from members to help ensure that we cover a varied and appropriate range of topics in our CPD Programme and Annual Pensions Conference.

This sub-committee plays an important and highly active role in shaping the content provided in the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' (IFoA's) Pensions CPD events and education.  They seek to ensure the events include a good mix of professionalism, current issues, and hot topics.  The tasks involved include:

  • creating and developing an excellent and varied pensions CPD events programme
  • content for Pensions Conference
  • identifying topics and potential speakers for specific events
  • listening to members’ feedback.

Skills and experience 

If you are a member of the IFoA, and have an enthusiasm for lifelong learning and planning CPD events, we would like to hear from you.  We are ideally looking for volunteers who have:

  • an awareness of current issues in pensions
  • an ability to come up with ideas and to identify hot topics
  • a willingness to pro-actively help organise and chair one event per year (this includes making contact with the potential speakers and securing their support)
  • a desire to develop CPD online and explore new delivery methods would also be an advantage but is not essential
  • experience of organising training events is also desirable but not essential.

 In order to broaden the expertise on the sub-committee, we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who currently work within the public sector.

Time commitment

The time commitment would be one hour meetings every quarter, from September through to July, plus approximately another hour per month (more when managing a specific event) for follow up emails/calls etc.  Meetings will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members, and do not require members to attend in person.

Each session the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Engagement and Learning Directorate requires the support of Non-Actuaries to support the assessment marking of the IFoA CP3 Communications exam. 

The IFoA has a number of paid opportunities for Non-Actuaries to assist in marking of the CP3 communications exam.  As a Non-Actuary Marker you will be part of the CP3 subject team and will report to the Chief Examiner.

The Communication Practice exam paper, known as CP3, is a test of student’s ability to filter information, and communicate it to a particular audience.  When marking the paper as a Non-Actuary, you will be asked to assess the scripts based on format, planning and presentation, language used, jargon and content.  Markers will be provided with a full marking schedule which outlines where marks should be awarded. 

There is no specific experience or qualification required to apply.  It would be beneficial that candidates are working in Finance, Insurance, Investment, Business Consultation/Development, Strategy, HR, Communication or PR sectors. 

As part of the recruitment process for the Marker role you will be asked to undertake a marking exercise.  A member of the Quality team will contact you and provide you with the relevant material.  Your allocation to the bank is dependent on completion of this exercise to an acceptable standard.

Once added to the bank, you will be contacted in advance of each exam session to confirm your availability to mark for the upcoming exams.  Being on the bank does not guarantee an allocation of marking in every session.

Independent Examiners are appointed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to assist in monitoring the quality and standards of university programmes with IFoA exemption agreements.

They play a vital role in ensuring that the exemption recommendation process runs smoothly and make a positive impact on maintaining and developing university programmes which have agreements with the IFoA.

This enables us to demonstrate to the Financial Reporting Council Conduct Committee as well as other stakeholders and customers, that the quality and standards of alternative routes to Qualification are equivalent to the Profession’s exams.

This is a senior role with a high level of responsibility and as such we take considerable care in the selection process.

We are seeking to hear from Fellows, Associates and Honorary Fellows who have:

  • experience in actuarial practice and/or are involved in teaching actuarial science programmes
  • relevant experience in setting and marking the IFoA’s exams, or equivalent university programme or professional qualification exams
  • a good working knowledge of the IFoA’s current exam syllabus and structure and awareness of the latest developments.

It is important to us to have the right balance of practitioners and academics each year and therefore we are keen to build up a good bank of support upon which we can draw.

Inspire the next generation to consider an actuarial career.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is looking for members who want to promote an actuarial career to enthusiastic young people.

If you want the opportunity to get out into your community or to visit a university and help guide the next generation in a fulfilling and diverse career, as an actuary, then this is the volunteer vacancy for you.

A Career Ambassador is a rewarding opportunity, which can take you to all sorts of interesting places.  We are seeking volunteers to speak at schools, colleges and universities about an actuarial career.  The IFoA attends over 15 career fairs and talks annually and Career Ambassadors help represent the IFoA and the industry as a whole at these events.

How it works

Once confirmed, you will be added to a bank of names of Career Ambassadors.  You will then, as opportunities arise, be sent an email by the Careers Team.  These opportunities might be invitations to attend a careers fair, or to give an A-level student a call to explain to him or her what an actuary does.

We also hope you will pro-actively look for opportunities in your area.  When you identify an opportunity we ask you to let our Career team know, so we can provide you with up to date material to support your talk.

To volunteer to act as a Career Ambassador you should either be a qualified actuary or a student member in employment working towards your qualification.  You need to be confident enough to be able to talk about your route into the profession and your current role.  You should also be in a position to know a bit about the current exams, how the profession works and what we do.

Background

City & Guilds have been successful in applying to the Skills Funding Agency for 17 standards, one of which is the Actuarial Level 4 Standard.
Apprenticeships benefit employers and individuals, and by boosting the skills of the workforce they help to improve economic productivity. Apprenticeship reforms will support an increase in the quality of apprenticeships so that more individuals have the chance to pursue a successful career – whether this is their first step on the employment ladder or progression within a current employer or sector.

The role of the Assessor

Successful candidates will become an Independent End-point Assessor for City & Guilds Independent End Point Assessment Service, in the Investment Industry area.

As an Independent End-point Assessor, you will be the key person in the decision making process of apprenticeship outcomes.  The primary focus of this role is to liaise with the relevant organisations / employers; planning and carrying out assessment activities; and ensuring consistency of grading decisions.  You will also have the opportunity to share and interpret your decisions as part of standardisation meetings which will be run by a Lead Independent Assessor for internal training and moderation purposes.  Having gained expertise and credibility through your work in the industry, you will have the chance to be part of a team looking to develop the Investment Industry professionals of the future.

Providing financial education through the Livery Schools Link, the London-based Worshipful Company of Actuaries has teamed up with Teaching Business Enterprise and Employability in Schools (BEE) to provide financial education to young people. We are currently running schemes in two primary schools - one in Tower Hamlets in London, and one in Dorking in Surrey - and we are likely to be setting one up in Hertfordshire in 2019.

Each scheme comprises six sessions across the Summer and Autumn terms. Four of the sessions are conducted in the classroom at the school and one at the Bank of England. The final session is a Dragon’s Den style event hosted at local offices. Each session lasts up to 2 hours. Ideally volunteers would be able to attend more than one of these sessions to help to provide some continuity for the children. The schools may require DBS checks for volunteers.
 
If you are a member of the IFoA and live and/or work in, or near, London, Dorking or Hertfordshire, please consider volunteering to share your enthusiasm and your knowledge of finance with young people in our schools.

This is an excellent opportunity for Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) members with experience in our exams to get involved in providing support to our student members, around the globe. 

In 2016 Actuaries Without Borders (AWB®) launched a global mentorship program, covering remote exam tutoring for professional actuarial exams, and providing the following benefits to the global society:

  1. assistance in the development of the actuarial profession where there is a lack of such resources
  2. contributes to the awareness of the actuarial profession and the spread of the actuarial education, by encouraging qualified actuaries and academics across the world to volunteer in global mentoring, including actuarial exam tutoring, through a convenient platform available around the clock.

This program is not intended to provide free consulting service nor non-actuarial coaching.  It is restricted to non-commercial use.

The program has expanded rapidly following its launch, and to meet the demand of different mentees AWB are currently looking for individuals to volunteer to become mentors and also for someone to take on the role of deputy project manager.

At the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) we pride ourselves on working collaboratively with organisations that employ our student members.  It is vital that we get your feedback and work with you to support your (and our) students, so make sure you have a volunteer Student Employer Contact (SEC) registered with us.

How does this benefit you?  Having an SEC:

  • gives you direct communication with our Engagement and Learning Directorate
  • will ensure you are one of the first to receive important information and updates about any changes which may effect your students
  • allows your organisations’ voice to be heard and for your organisation to have your say about a hot topic (such as the Education Strategy Review)
  • provides you with support to ensure students in your organisation are supported.

An SEC does not need to be a qualified actuary but they do need to be someone who is willing to play a proactive role in two-way communication between the IFoA and the employer.

As this role involves supporting students, it is not possible for a current student to become an SEC.

If your organisation employs IFoA student members we encourage you to appoint an SEC.  If you would like to volunteer to take on this role, or to check if someone in your organisation has already volunteered, please contact Debbie Atkins, Head of Engagement.  Debbie will put you in contact with Kirstie Smith, Senior Stakeholder Relationship Manager at the IFoA.  Kirstie supports all SECs.  When contacting Debbie it would be helpful if you could please provide a note of the following:

  • your organisation’s name and location(s)
  • an approximate number of IFoA student members currently in your organisation 
  • a note of your ARN, if you are a member of the IFoA
  • if you are not a member of the IFoA, please provide your full contact details plus a note of your role within your organisation.
