Cash-flow driven investing is a game-changer for DB pension funds navigating their end-game. Suitable for sponsors who want to reduce risks on their balance sheets. And for trustees, it shifts the focus to providing greater certainty of returns, managing funding level volatility and ensuring they have enough income to pay cash-flow requirements. Within 10-15 years, c90% of pension funds will be cash-flow negative. This changes the risk profile radically, and means consultants, trustees and sponsors need to adapt and think differently about the design and implementation of end-game / CDI portfolios. We will also consider CDI through the lens of Covid-19 experience and the views of the Pensions Regulator via its proposed fast track route

Norbert Fullerton leads Janus Henderson’s institutional client strategy business where he is responsible for thought leadership and strategic investment. He provides insight from its clients’ viewpoint, with strategic input into product development, marketing and the overall direction of the EMEA institutional business. Fullerton is an experienced investment consultant to large pension funds and other institutional investors in EMEA. Before joining Janus Henderson, he was a partner at Mercer leading the growth of its Wealth (joint Investment and Retirement) Consulting and Solutions business. He was formerly a director at Russell Investments and a pensions and investment consultant at Willis Towers Watson.
