The Diversity Advisory Group is delighted to announce its latest event, a panel debate aiming to take the bold step of opening the Pandora’s box of diversity issues.

Chair: Fiona Morrison, President, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

Last year’s IFoA Diversity Survey showed that over a third of men believe that it is easy for female actuaries to climb the career ladder. In contrast, this view was shared by fewer than 10% of women. Why do men and women have such differing views and what can we – should we - do about it?

Building on Immediate Past President Nick Salter’s 2014/15 diversity theme and the subsequent development of an IFoA diversity strategy it is envisioned that this event will offer the opportunity to pose those questions you may be reluctant to raise in your own workplace.

This event will cover discussion on the topics of:

  • Career progression
  • Getting boards to fully engage in diversity
  • Unconscious bias
  • Balancing career and children, and
  • Financial benefits of diversity

Our panel includes Helena Morrissey, founder of the 30% Club and CEO of Newton Investment Management, Jeremy Spira, Thinking Ahead Group, Willis Towers Watson, and Siobhan Martin, Human Resources Director for Mercer UK. All experts in the field of diversity, they will share advice, strategies for success and tackle the trickiest questions the audience care to throw at them.

This event builds on the Diversity Advisory Group’s 2015 report, findings from last year’s survey, and feedback from our inaugural Monica Allanach Lecture suggesting that many of you, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion or social background are keen to expand the scope of the IFoA’s diversity work.
Don’t miss the opportunity to share your thoughts in this important debate!

Who should attend?

We welcome anyone interested in a discussion of diversity in the workplace and who wants to get at the heart of issues affecting the industry. We are especially keen to expand our audience to anyone who might not normally attend an event on diversity – please circulate to colleagues and encourage them to attend!
