Speaker: Dr Marc Roper, Reader in the Computer and Information Sciences department at the University of Strathclyde

This talk on evolutionary finance will cover ways in which evolutionary and natural computing techniques are being used to address financial problems. Evolutionary and natural computing covers a class of algorithms that mimic processes from the natural world and which are particularly effective at handling problems which involve exploring very large complex search spaces or building approximations to complex functions. Examples include using genetic algorithms for portfolio optimisation and genetic programming and neural networks for forecasting and prediction.

Dr Marc Roper is a Reader in the Computer and Information Sciences department at the University of Strathclyde.  His main area of interest is in the development and evaluation of software engineering techniques to support the construction and evolution of more reliable and robust systems.  His work has covered a wide range of projects, including identification of road accident blackspots, forecasting customer buyer behaviour and modelling interventions to combat sedentary behaviour.
