This IFoA event for NEDs explores what skills and experience are required to undertake non-executive roles, e.g. as independent NEDs on fund boards or members of IGCs. The event will be chaired by Brandon Horwitz, an actuary who is a consultant and who has held various investment governance roles and who specialises in investment governance as well as being an iNED.

Investment fund governance remains a high profile issue with public and regulatory scrutiny at all-time high ,especially with examples like the Woodford fund issues in H2 2019. Actuaries can offer significant value as members of investment fund boards and investment governance committees (IGC), with many already holding or exploring these roles.

This event will explore what skills and experience are required to undertake these non-executive roles, e.g. as independent NEDs on fund boards or members of IGCs.These skills are especially relevant to assessing Value-for-Money of investment funds, something which has been under the regulatory and public spotlight in recent years and which will continue to attract attention, especially as the first ‘Value Statements’ are published for UK authorised investment funds in Q1 2020.

The format is a panel discussion with representation of key perspectives including:

  • An Actuary who is currently an iNED of an investment fund Board and/or on an Independent Governance Committee
  • The executive perspective from an investment firm / insurer (or industry expert) on what they look for when recruitment non-executives to their boards / IGCs
  • A headhunter’s perspective on finding the right candidates for clients and how actuaries could ‘fit the bill’
