Wednesday 1 March 2017 17:00 - 20:30

The NED MIG will be running another talk on 1 March 2017 for aspiring or relatively inexperienced NEDs. In the past people approaching retirement with years of executive experience have been considered the most suitable candidates for NED roles, but in recent years NEDs have been getting younger. Well run businesses need balanced, diversified boards, and progressive businesses want NEDs who are comfortable with new technology and the challenges that rapidly changing customer-focused business models are presenting. Younger candidates may have a point of entry by offering knowledge and skills and mindset that older generations lack.  Boards are looking beyond traditional circles for NEDs who have built their reputation in other fields and are appointing on the basis of potential, not past experience. Traditional businesses collaborating or merging with new fintech businesses present opportunities for those with actuarial qualifications and a good appreciation of risk to offer their services as NEDs.

So how can aspiring NEDs best demonstrate their credentials for a Board role? If Boards are persuaded to seek out younger candidates who can bring a fresh perspective to the boardroom, what are the skills and personal attributes that are most likely to be in demand when social and environmental responsibility, business ethics and sustainability are all in question? Can actuarial candidates develop extra skills that can give them an advantage?

We are inviting entrepreneurs in fintech, private equity and recruitment to talk about the appointment of suitable new NEDs.
