One hundred members have already completed the programme and 200 are currently undertaking the programme as part of our second cohort.

Of the first cohort, 80% said that the programme content was relevant to their role and 81% agreed that, having completed the Certificate, they could confidently contribute to a conversation about data science in the actuarial field.

IFoA Fellow and Innovation Actuary at SCOR, Bálint Bóné, was amongst the programme graduates. He said: “The certificate provides content tailored to complement our actuarial skills and explained in a way which makes it easy to make the connection between theory and practical application.

“The course has a great selection of optional materials as well (like programming assignments and additional reading), encouraging learners to dig into a topic if it sparks their interest.

“In addition, the certificate has a good business focus, providing the knowledge and tools necessary for an actuary to identify the data science techniques which could make the most impact for the business, while also considering professional and ethical points as well.

“It is definitely a good step for the profession to launch this and I would encourage my fellow actuaries to have a look at it!”

The programme offers eight weeks of online learning, with structured support, followed by two weeks to complete the final programme assignment.

The estimated weekly study time commitment for the certificate is 8-10 hours.

The programme provides an introduction to the concepts, tools and techniques used in data science, and their relevance within an actuarial context. It blends theory and practice, with the use of practical examples and case studies.
