Booking is now open for the first IFoA Certificate in Data Science, a 10 week online programme running from 30 April this year.

The programme provides an introduction to the concepts, tools and techniques used in data science, and their relevance within an actuarial context. It blends theory and practice, with the use of practical examples and case studies.

The programme is delivered online over eight weeks, with structured support, followed by two weeks to complete the final programme assignment.

The estimated weekly study time commitment for the certificate is 8-10 hours.

IFoA President, John Taylor, said:

“I am thrilled to see this new and important IFoA launch. Data science is an emergent field, still evolving and currently without the established reputation of actuarial science.

“But the power of Big Data and the insights that data science technologies and methodologies can draw from it is already way beyond question. Our relationship with data science will shape the future of the actuarial profession.

“I believe that data science can empower actuaries. If we develop our understanding, it gives us a platform to enhance our value in our current roles and opens opportunities to move into wider fields.

“The IFoA Certificate in Data Science is now the route to this and a big statement to employers.”

This new standalone credential is open to all IFoA members, regardless of background or experience in this area.
