In this blog, Khushil Modi talks about his journey from studying actuarial science at LSE to working at Deloitte as a consulting analyst.

I joined the Deloitte Consulting Graduate scheme within the Actuarial team after graduating in 2016. Currently aligned to Insurance, I have also had past experience in other areas of the Actuarial team here, such as Pensions, Banking and data analytics. Prior to joining Deloitte, I had internships at Zurich Insurance within their General Insurance Reserving team, at the Royal Bank of Scotland within the Risk team, and at a smaller Actuarial Recruitment company.

Khushil ModiI studied Actuarial Science at the LSE, having always had a keen interest in maths. Although I was initially torn between a maths degree and an actuarial science degree, I knew that the latter in no way limited me to being just an Actuary – the modules studied involved statistics, maths and economics and so I knew a breadth of options were available after graduation.

This April I will be sitting the CA1 exam titled “Actuarial Risk Management”. I have passed the 9 CT exams and CA2.

I found my graduate role through lots and lots of research online! My housemate at university was a Scholar at Deloitte in a different department so I knew of the name, but finding out about all the different companies offering actuarial roles was quite daunting at first. A great place to start is the Actuarial directory on the Institute’s website, which lists all the employers offering internships, apprenticeships or graduate roles.

I didn’t have any experience with Deloitte prior to applying, but I was drawn to the range of services they offered to clients and the breadth of what I could work on as an actuarial consultant here. I had some past internship experience at other companies, and felt that a graduate role was what worked for me; however, each person has their own path that is best for them.
