Debbie Atkins, IFoA's Head of Engagement

In this blog, Debbie Atkins, IFoA's Head of Engagement, talks about volunteering.

Take part in the forthcoming Volunteer Survey and help shape the volunteering experience at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Volunteers, past and present, are at the heart of our profession.

Coming from all aspects of the actuarial profession and beyond, volunteers work in partnership with the IFoA Executive staff, using their skills and experience to support, run, regulate and enhance the IFoA for everyone. They use their intellectual expertise to advance our thought leadership and research, helping to keep the profession relevant in a fast-changing marketplace.

But the role they play is far from static; over the past five years we’ve worked hard to listen to our volunteers about their experiences, gaining insight from what they tell us about their roles so that we can better understand the impact of their work.

We’ve used this insight to help create a better and more rewarding volunteer experience – working in partnership to build an inclusive, collaborative community of volunteers who feel supported and who are making a real difference.

We are hugely grateful to everyone who volunteers, for the time they devote to supporting the profession and the IFoA.

How can we improve volunteering at the IFoA?

“I am a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and I work for Munich Re in Singapore. I had been planning to contribute to the actuarial profession for a while now, as it has given me a fulfilling career.

The opportunity arose when my colleague asked if I would be interested in becoming a CPD Co-ordinator for our organisation. I was delighted to take up this volunteer role and have enjoyed discovering ways to enrich the breadth and depth of the traditional role of a CPD Co-ordinator.”

Each year we ask volunteers to have their say about what would make their roles more satisfying.

In early February we will email all of our volunteers with a simple, one-question survey, together with an invitation to email me directly with your views about what would enhance your satisfaction as a volunteer.

This information ensures we understand the views of our volunteers as a single metric, and through the individual stories and suggestions that come from a direct, one-to-one response.

From this insight we’ll be developing our support, and new training materials, making changes to our Volunteer Information Pack, enhancing our Volunteer profiles and much more during the year to come.

Thank you for taking the time to have your say!
