Climate change is expected to have a significant impact on the economic and social landscape in which health and care companies operate, with implications for the work of health and care (H&C) actuaries. There are currently few resources available to H&C actuaries, particularly to help them identify specific issues that are relevant to their work and associated actuarial advice, and to help them explore the potential impacts.
Key objectives:
- Develop and maintain a Climate Change Practical Guide for H&C actuaries
- Identify and monitor climate change issues of relevance to H&C actuaries
- Recommend topics that are most relevant to H&C actuaries where further in-depth research would be of value and engage with the H&C Research Subcommittee. For example, topics could include:
- Air quality
- Food and water security
- Temperature change
- Extreme weather
- Work with climate change WPs from other practice areas to share information and ensure a degree of consistency across practice areas
- Share relevant findings and resources with H&C actuaries and help facilitate an appropriate response to climate change
- Identify relevant publicly available research and other resources which may be interest to H&C actuaries [ongoing]
- Curate the H&C CC section on the IFoA website [ongoing]
- Explore opportunities to co-ordinate with IAAHS on climate change initiatives
Key outputs:
- A published Climate Change Practical Guide for H&C actuaries
- A maintained list of key climate change topics for the H&C practice area
- A prioritised list of topics where further research may be valuable
- Articles, webinars, etc presenting the outputs and findings of the WP
