CERA seminar

The CERA seminar aims to enable delegates to investigate and discuss more practical applications of enterprise risk management, which is not possible in the time allowed for the SP9 Enterprise Risk Management exam

The seminar was one of the recommendations of the CERA Review Panel, when it reviewed our provision of the CERA credential.

CERA: Paid opportunities

The IFoA holds several CERA seminars each year for its members and one of the most positively commented features is the direct access the delegates have to our members who are experienced ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) practitioners. These members come along to support us on the day and share their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of ERM practitioners and CROs. We are always happy to appoint further members to these roles and would be delighted to hear from you.

Next seminar dates

If you passed Subject SP9 (formerly ST9) after 1 September 2012, or who were granted an exemption after 30 January 2013 you will need to attend this seminar.

Before you can attend the CERA seminar you will need to have passed, or been granted an exemption from, the SP9 exam. You do not need to have completed all the other exams yet.

Following successful attendance, those who have qualified as an Associate or as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries will be eligible to apply for the CERA designation.

You can book your place online, or download the CERA seminar application form to pay by bank transfer or cheque.

The cost of attendance is £450.00 with a reduced rate of £270.00 available to eligible members. 

Members living outside the UK who are eligible to attend the seminar and wish to attend a face-to-face version, may be able to attend at a venue closer to home rather than coming to the UK. We currently have reciprocal agreements with the societies in South Africa and Australia, and with the Casualty Actuarial Society in the United States.

You will pay the local costs of the seminar and if you can produce a certificate of attendance/participation the IFoA will recognise this as part of the process of obtaining the CERA designation.

What’s involved in the online seminar?

The online seminar takes place over four weeks with an example of the timescales below.

On the Monday of week 1, you will need to log in to the IFoA’s VLE platform, details of which will be sent to you in advance, and watch an introductory video to the seminar and access all of the necessary materials.

You will then have just under two weeks to complete the pre-seminar work to an acceptable standard and meet up with your team in an online space to prepare your presentations for the first session.

In week 3, we will be holding 3-hour sessions* on the Tuesday (session 1), Wednesday (session 2) and Thursday (session 3) of that week. These are the seminar days when you will log in to our video conference platform (Bluejeans). You will need to give presentations, ask questions and engage with other delegates and ERM practitioners. There will be work to complete in between these sessions.

Week 4 gives you an opportunity to provide feedback and to write a reflective piece on what you learnt from the seminar and to identify any gaps in your ERM knowledge or areas which you would like to explore further. If you choose to share these with us, we can pass ideas on to the Risk Management Board’s Committee for Lifelong Learning who can put on events tailored to your needs, at which you can claim CPD.

What’s involved in the face-to-face seminar?

Before the seminar you will be sent a pre-seminar workbook giving details of some preparation work you'll need to do:

  • calculations for a team presentation
  • reading for a governance case study

On the day of the seminar you will:

  • take an active part in discussions, lively debates and case studies
  • have the opportunity to meet and talk to senior risk officers
  • build on the pre-seminar work that you will have already done
  • undertake challenging and thought provoking team exercises.

Before joining the seminar you will be put in touch with your allocated team members using an online community on the website where you can get to know each other, as well as discuss the preparatory work you will have already done.
