The role of the “Risk Function” in the context of Solvency II and what are the features of an “effective" Risk Function

This event will cover the qualitative aspects of the Risk Function and in particular the challenges that organisations have faced and/or are facing post Solvency II implementation.

Key areas to be covered include:

Expertise needed for operating efficiently and effectively within the corporation. What should be the credentials of the CRO and how the actuarial profession fits within these credentials

What is an effective governance structure that will allow the Risk function to operate optimally. There is generally not a “single fit all” solution but what are those features of a corporation that will determine what an optimal governance structure is

  • What Management Information should the Risk Function receive and produce to enable an effective communication of information with the various stakeholders.

  • Has Solvency II led to a significant transition on the way Risk management is seen within corporations or do we see the need for strict compliance being the dominant factor

  • Is there any cultural changes that organisations had to go through over the course of their Solvency II journey

  • Looking ahead, how do we see the role of the risk function evolving and what are those circumstances that could cause organisation to revisit their current risk function structure

  • When should the CRO be consulted on strategic decisions and how can the CRO influence and shape the risk appetite of the firm
