The elements of climate change that influence and impact on health & care, both in terms of the direct and indirect impact on mortality and morbidity, and the sustainability of healthcare globally are many.
This webinar aims to bring that to life for health & care actuaries, starting with an update on the work of the Health & Care Climate Change Working Party, including a high level overview of areas for consideration. We’ll also signpost to some of the emerging climate change resources, and guides that are available for actuaries.
This will be followed by two presentations covering our initial focus areas which are biodiversity, air quality, and temperature extremes. Climate change is understood to have a number of detrimental impacts on human health, some direct, some indirect. Nicola will present a summary of what is known so far. Bernd will explain how changing global patterns in heat and humidity are significant drivers of risk relating to human health and mortality, and highlight the need for more research in this area.

Anna sits on the IoFA Health & Care Board, and is leading on the climate change and sustainability engagement plan for the board. We are aiming to start the discussion and build a network covering the many aspects of this subject that impact on health & care, including the considerations and opportunities for health & care actuaries.
Anna has over 25 years of experience in the life and health insurance market, holding leadership roles in pricing, experience analysis, and proposition development in some of the major insurers and reinsurers, covering both UK and overseas markets. Anna’s current role sits with-in employee benefit and wellbeing consultancy delivering data led and evidence-based health & wellbeing strategies for employers

Paul Lacock
Paul is head of consumer PMI pricing and underwriting at Bupa UK and chairs the IFoA Health & Care Climate Change Working Party.
Before moving to the UK in 2016 he worked in the private health insurance market in South Africa, leading the actuarial and managed care teams at Old Mutual Healthcare, and then as an independent consultant providing advice and analytical services to health insurers and global pharmaceutical companies. He chaired the Healthcare subcommittee of the Actuarial Society of South Africa for several years.
Nicola Oliver
Nicola is a leading expert in Public Health and associated mortality, morbidity, & longevity risk. Areas of specialist knowledge include; public health policy, socio economic disparities, impact of risk behaviours on life expectancy & future infectious disease risks.
Nicola is the founder of Medical Intelligence, established in 2007, a consultancy dedicated to providing impartial expert insights into the main drivers behind changes in life expectancy and disease risk for the insurance industry.
Nicola’s background includes a long career in the UK National Health Service, firstly in intensive care, and latterly in Public Health.
Nicola is an affiliate member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and a member of the Health & Care Board, as well as volunteering on multiple working parties, including the COVID-19 actuarial response, and the exam board.
Bernd Wilke
Bernd is a Senior Emerging Risk Manager at Swiss Re, responsible for monitoring future risks that are likely to impact the insurance industry. He is an expert on environmental issues, the human factor and sustainability. He is part of a team assessing the top sustainability risks within the Swiss Re Group.
Bernd previously has worked for over twelve years at Swiss Re as a Risk Engineer. He developed risk assessment methodologies for different industries, including the oil and chemical sectors, workers' compensation and professional indemnity. He assisted in the environmental liability area of emerging risks, collaborated in the development of forward-looking modelling in casualty and provided support to the company's claims units. In addition, he has worked extensively on sustainability issues worldwide.
Prior to Swiss Re, Bernd worked for Geotech, Inc. in Japan. He holds a Master's Degree in Physical Geography from the University of Basel in Switzerland and a Certificate in Science Journalism from the Swiss Journalism School in Luzern.
