Pensions Winter Forum: Pensions and Sustainability - challenges for actuaries

Climate change, bio-diversity, Covid-19 – systemic risks falling under the umbrella of sustainability that should be right at the top of the agendas of corporate boards and financial institutions like pension schemes.  They will have a material impact on employer covenant and future profits, investment returns, mortality, and hence advice actuaries give to their clients.

The actuarial profession has taken a major step towards addressing the role of actuaries with 38 recommendations and actions approved by Council in the Autumn of 2020.  Moreover, the Green Finance Education Charter requires the profession to ‘mainstream the principles and practice of green finance into our programs of initial and continuing professional development’.

Actuaries need to take action now - but how?  With a focus on climate change, this session will provide informed insight to enable you to improve your knowledge and understanding of the issues involved, demonstrate how it will impact advice to your clients, and highlight prospective opportunities for actuaries within pensions and wider fields.

Speaker:

Neil Mitchell

Neil is currently a PhD researcher in climate finance at the University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute. Prior to that, he was a pensions actuary with 30 years experience advising UK pension schemes.  He is currently the pensions liaison for the IFoA’s Sustainability Board and member of the Climate Related Risks Taskforce.
