16th East Asian Actuarial Conference

The 16th East Asian Actuarial Conference was held from 10-13 October 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, on the theme of Venture into uncertainty - capture opportunities!

Opening ceremony

The four-day conference opened at 09.00 on 10 October with a magnificent display of  Malaysian drumming. 

Mr Teh Loo Hai, Chairman of the Organising Committee, welcomed all delegates to SE Asia.  Approximately 350 delegates are attending the conference which includes three plenary sessions and 19 parallel sessions.

A keynote address was given by the Assistant Governor, Bank Negara Malaysia, Mr Donald Joshua Jaganathan.

Plenary session led by Philip Scott

Philip Scott, President-elect of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, spoke in a plenary session on the topic of Solvency II:  The challenges and opportunities beyond Europe.  He also showed a short video of actuaries newly-qualified in the CERA qualification, speaking about why they chose to acquire this qualification and the enhanced career opportunities it will afford them.  Philip's presentation raised a number of questions among delegates on Solvency II, and also a few questions about CERA.  Download the presentation here.

CPD event and new qualifiers presentations

During the conference, Philip Scott also led a seminar on the evening of 12 October at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, which included a presentation on the Profession's strategy.  This was attended by 25 delegates, including Mr Teh Loo Hai. The event included presentations to four new qualifiers:  Ms Phing Huang, Ms Yin Tse Loo, Ms Jasveen Marne, and Ms Lee Von Foo.

The evening ended with an eight-course Chinese banquet, attended by the new qualifiers and their familiies.

Closing ceremony

The EAAC closed on 13 October with speeches from the Organising Committee Chairman, Mr Teh Loo Hai.  The Chairman then handed over the ceremonial flag to Singapore, who are the hosts for the event in 2013.  He also announced that from 2013 the conference would be held every year.

The closing ceremony was marked by an eight-course Chinese banquet, with a Malaysian dance display for entertainment.  During the meal, all countries represented at the conference were invited to perform on stage and all actuaries and presidents willingly took part.  Prizes were awarded for the best national performance.
