Worshipful Company of Actuaries

The Company was founded in 1979 and is number 91 in order of precedence. There are over 200 liverymen, all of whom are qualified actuaries.

The Company has three main objectives. Firstly it seeks to extend recognition, within the City and beyond, of the actuarial profession and a greater understanding of the work actuaries carry out. It seeks to support the work of the UK professional bodies to promote the work of actuaries in fields outside the traditional ones of pensions and life assurance.

The second objective is to support the educational work of the Institute and Faculty. We award bursaries to students following actuarial courses at several universities in the UK. We sponsor an annual student lecture at City University and award prizes for excellence in our own Faculty and Institute exams. From time to time we present an Award of Honour to an actuary who had made an outstanding contribution in his or her own field which has not otherwise been recognised.

The third objective involves our Charitable Trust (formed in 1980). Although actuaries who have fallen on hard times are, mercifully, few and far between, we take pride in our ability, largely through the efforts of the Livery year by year, to make donations to charitable causes. The Trustees take much trouble to seek charities, both with a City link and outside, where relatively small donations make a difference.

There is a fine sense of fellowship within the Company and we are always pleased to welcome guests to join us at our gatherings.

Forthcoming events

Lord Mayor's Show, Lunch and Fireworks - Saturday 9 November 2013

The Worshipful Company of Actuaries (WCA) is once again inviting members of the profession, and their friends and familiies, to view the Lord Mayor's Show - at almost 800 years the oldest, longest and most popular procession in the world - on Saturday 9 November and/or to have lunch followed by viewing the fireworks on the Thames early that evening.

This is a special year for the WCA with Adrian Waddingham, a past Master of the WCA, holding the significant position in the City of London of Sherriff.  He will ride in one of the official carriages.  The Master, Wardens and Clerk of the WCA will be in another carriage, and there will be a WCA float in the procession.
