The Actuarial Research Centre seeks new PhD candidates

15 August 2013

Are you interested in undertaking a funded PhD that creates a bridge between actuarial research and industry?  The Actuarial Research Centre (ARC) is currently considering new applicants to commence their studies in Autumn 2013.

Established by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in partnership with the Scottish Financial Risk Academy (SFRA), the ARC accepted its first students in September 2012.  The first two students have been working on projects in Banking Liquidity (part sponsored by Hymans Robertson) and Liquidity Risk on Corporate Bonds (sponsored by Partnership).  Both projects have benefited significantly from the industry expertise of the sponsoring organisations and other key members at the IFoA, which is a key advantage of undertaking a PhD at the ARC.

The ARC is now considering new projects on a range of topics including longevity modelling and projection of complex balance sheets.  This tranche of projects are expected to be supervised out of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. PhDs usually require three to four years of full-time study and are fully funded by the ARC and project sponsors.

If you are interested in adding a new dimension to your career by embarking on a research project that is relevant to the development of actuarial science as well as to practitioners, ARC Director Professor Andrew Cairns (A.J.G.Cairns@hw.ac.uk) would be keen to hear from you.
