Colin Wilson

Colin Wilson is head of investment & risk at the Government Actuary’s Department. In this role he is responsible for leading the consulting services to public sector clients on the identification and control of financial and investment risks inherent in the structuring of financial institutions, the use of financial and economic levers and the provision of benefits and services by government.
Prior to taking up this role Colin was a senior consultant at financial risk consultancy Barrie & Hibbert, where he is responsible for marketing the company’s stochastic annuity model and related consultancy services. Previously he was director of quantitative research at M&G, the investment arm of Prudential. He worked in the portfolio management group, where he was portfolio manager for Prudential’s annuity funds and was a member of the derivatives management committee. He was responsible for many applications of quantitative analysis and stochastic modelling including strategic asset allocation advice, optimisation of tactical asset allocation, portfolio risk control, use and pricing of derivatives in product design and consultancy on shareholder value measurement techniques.
Colin joined Prudential in 1993. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1983 with a degree in mathematics. Before training to be an actuary, he worked as a mathematician for a software consultancy, undertaking all kinds of quantitative work, mainly in the defence market.
For the Profession, Colin has been a member of Institute Council and formerly chaired the Finance, Investment & Risk Management Board. He has been a member and chair of several working parties on risk management, quantitative techniques in investment, applications of derivatives and value measurement. He is also on the council of the Institute for Quantitative Investment Research.
