Document description

(Lecture delivered in December 1931 on the life of William Morgan (1750-1833), Actuary to the Society for Equitable Assurances from 1774 to 1830, who may be considered the first actuary who practised the modern actuarial role in life insurance. The Equitable Life Assurance Society established in 1762 was the first to operate on an actuarial basis. William Morgan first followed the instructions of his uncle Richard Price, but conducted the first actuarial valuation of the Society and remained actuary for over 55 years. This article is a full biographical memoir by William Palin Elderton.

Another different article of the same title and by the same author is in Journal of the Institute of Actuaries (1933) 64:365-366. It is a short exposition of original actuarial work in manuscript by William Morgan.
