Case study - Mark Cathcart, Barrie & Hibbert

SFRA member Barrie & Hibbert have already benefited from the PhD research they co-funded. Mark Cathcart recently completed a PhD on Monte Carlo simulation approaches to the valuation and risk management of unit-linked insurance valuation and risk management of unit linked insurance products with guarantees.

Andy Frepp, Chief Executive of Barrie & Hibbert said; “Mark’s research has benefited Barrie & Hibbert both in terms of helping take forward our technical understanding of how to apply the Least Squares Monte Carlo (LSMC) method to complex insurance problems and has also been a contributing factor in the commercialisation of the intellectual property through new software products and consulting.”

Not only has Mark’s work been an important piece of academic research but it has had clear and effective practical applications that have begun to benefit the business of Barrie & Hibbert.

Of his experience, Mark said; “This PhD allowed me to conduct academic research into some of the latest challenges facing insurers and provided the perfect balance between academia and industry relevance.”

The ARC seeks to emulate the success of this cooperation through the linking of academic research and industry for mutual benefit.
