Strategy
We are committed to a range of initiatives on research activity.
Our overall objective is to encourage research and knowledge exchange that:
- Promotes the monitoring and development of actuarial science including actuarial methods and use of data
- Supports and develops the competence of members throughout their careers
- Helps actuaries speak out publically with authority in matters relevant to our profession and where actuaries can make a difference
and so maintain and enhance public confidence in the work of actuaries and the reputation of the actuarial profession.
Three initiatives were agreed:
- Targeted external research
In the members' survey, risk management and mortality/longevity/morbidity were clearly identified as priority areas for external research.
Any calls for research will appear here. - Boosting member-led research
Member-led research is still vigorously pursued in all practice areas through working parties, but the current economic climate has meant that the time of many volunteers is being squeezed.
Some funds have been set aside to help projects that can show that some additional support (e.g. a paid researcher, enhanced administrative help) would really help the project achieve its aims. - Thought-leadership/speaking out
The members' survey showed that members want their professional body to speak out with authority and engage in thought leadership. This can sometimes need the commissioning of objective research and funds have been set aside for this activity.
